The Warning
Kindness Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The way we're crashing into everything
I feel it coming
I hold my breath, I'm seeing everything
It's like a warning
The way we're crashing into everything
I feel it coming
I hold my breath, I'm seeing everything
So will you tell me
Did you ever care?
I need to know that
The play was fair
Please just tell me that it hurts
Please just tell me that it hurts
You're like a mountain
A silent paradise just for me
You ask no questions
It's not as peaceful as it used to be
You're like a mountain
A silent paradise built just for me
You ask no questions
It's not as peaceful as it used to be
If you never bleed
If you won't confess
Then I'll make you
Leave you with the mess
Yeah, oh no
Please just tell me that it hurts
Please just tell me that it hurts
The lyrics of Kindness feat. Robyn’s song The Warning is an incredibly emotive and striking piece of music, which speaks to the way our decisions can have far-reaching consequences, beyond just our own lives. The song seems to present the idea of a warning, that something bad, or at least something emotionally difficult, is on the horizon, represented by the various metaphors of crashing and bleeding in the lyrics. Despite the impending sense of doom, the singer seems to be searching for some kind of honesty and authenticity in their relationships with others, asking if they ever truly cared and if the play was fair. They want those around them to open up and be vulnerable, to admit that things are not always perfect and that sometimes it hurts.
The two parts of the song, the first about the impending warning, and the second about the mountain that used to be peaceful, beautifully contrast with each other to offer a clear sense of how things have changed. The peaceful and silent paradise that we create for ourselves is no longer so peaceful after all. The mountain, representing stability and security, is now being questioned, and our emotions are boiling up to the surface. This change is due to our actions, and the consequences we are about to face. Therefore, The Warning seems to encourage us to confront our past and present behaviors and face the consequences with honesty and integrity.
