Crosscut Saw
King Albert Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm a cross cut saw
Just drag me 'cross your log
You know, I'm a cross cut saw
Just drag me across your log
I cut your wood so easy for you
You can't help but say 'Hot dog!'

Some call me wood-choppin' Sam
Some call me wood-cuttin' Ben
Last girl I cut the wood for, you know
She wants me back again

I'm a cross cut saw,
Just drag me 'cross your log
I cut your wood so easy for you
You can't help but say 'Hot dog!'

I've got a double-bladed axe
That really cuts good
And I'm a cross cut saw, just bury me in the wood
I'm a cross cut saw,
Baby, just drag me 'cross your log

I cut your wood so easy for you, woman
You can't help but say 'Hot dog!'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Crosscut Saw" by King Albert tell the story of a man who compares himself to a crosscut saw. He urges the listener to "just drag [him] 'cross your log" because he can cut wood effortlessly. He seems to take pride in his ability to work with wood, and he has nicknames like "wood-choppin' Sam" and "wood-cuttin' Ben." The singer of the song tells the listener that he has a double-bladed axe which he can use to cut wood as well. He even compares himself to the wood itself, stating that he's a "cross cut saw, just bury me in the wood."

The lyrics of this song are intriguing because they take a concept as simple as cutting wood and make it into a fun, bluesy song. However, there could be a deeper meaning to this song. It could be interpreted that the song is about a man who has skill and experience with his work, which he takes pride in. He sees himself as reliable and efficient, and people want him back again once they experience his work. The song could also be interpreted to be about hard work and its rewards. Through the repetitive chorus of "I cut your wood so easy for you / You can't help but say 'Hot dog!'" the singer emphasizes the satisfaction and joy of a job well done.

Blues Guitar 101. Every lick, plus the tone.

A great, great two and a half minutes. The backing rhythm is perfect - everything solid and clear along that rumba highway. Albert's guitar ... sings, stings, swoons, and soars. Vocals ... natural, mellow, strong. Love the background chatter too, as Albert coaxes, cheerleads and punctuates throughout.

Yes. Perfection. Time stands still. Early on you hear him say "saw." Is he telling someone what song they be playing?

Albert is my favorite. Still have his album Live Wire/ Blues Power, an original pressing. And a photograph I took that he later autographed. And it was my honor to have him sing Happy Birthday to me in a Blues club in Toronto on December 8th. My favorite Blues player of all time.
