Music
King Carole Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Music is playing inside my head
Over and over and over again
My friend, there's no end to the music...
Ah, summer is over
But the music keeps playing
And won't let the cold get me down
Pictures are forming inside my brain
Soon with the colors they'll rain together and grow
Then don't you know, don't you know there'll be music...
Ah, it's not always easy

But the music keeps playing
And won't let the world get me down.

Overall Meaning

In King Carole's song "Music," she describes the power of music to uplift and inspire even in difficult times. The opening lyric, "Music is playing inside my head, over and over and over again," suggests that the singer is remembering a particular song or melody that has stuck with them. This repetition speaks to the way that music can get stuck in our heads and become a constant companion, providing comfort and familiarity.

Despite the end of summer and the onset of colder weather, the singer finds solace in the ongoing presence of music. She notes that "the music keeps playing and won't let the cold get me down." This suggests that music has the power to transcend external circumstances and provide a sense of warmth and comfort even in difficult times.

The final verse of the song describes how the singer imagines the music will transform into a visual experience, with "pictures...forming inside my brain" and soon "raining together and growing" with color. This suggests that music has a multi-sensory quality, and that it can inspire not just auditory sensations but visual ones as well. The ultimate message of the song is that even when things are tough, music can be a powerful source of resilience and hope, "won't let the world get me down."

Right there with you.

I got this album not long after it came out, mostly for "I Feel the Earth Move," since the single had come out right before the 1971 Sylmar/Newhall earthquake, and became an instant hit in L.A. I loved the entire album.

I brought it over to my dad's one afternoon, and he enjoyed it as well, and some years later confided to me that this song was the one that he felt captured the ending of his marriage to my mom most perfectly.

Interestingly, the song that always reminded me of their split was "Overs," by Simon and Garfunkel, but I'm not sure that he had even heard that song, much less knew it.

Still love this album, and Bookends, and SO MANY MORE!!!

Stayed in bed all mornin' just to pass the time
There's somethin' wrong here, there can be no denyin'
One of us is changin', or maybe we've just stopped tryin'

And it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no

It used to be so easy, livin' here with you
You were light and breezy, an' I knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy, and I feel like a fool

And it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no

There'll be good times again for me and you
But we just can't stay together, don't you feel it, too?
Still I'm glad for what we had and how I once loved you

But it's too late, baby now, it's too late
Though we really did try to make it (we can't make it)
Somethin' inside has died, and I can't hide
And I just can't fake it, oh, no, no, no, no, no

It's too late, baby, it's too late now, darling
It's too late

I'm a 47 year old construction worker and I heard this song for the first time two years ago and I cried. I was alone in my truck, driving to work, so I had time to dry my eyes by the time I got there and told everyone that I was doing great, even though this song tore into my emotions!

Beautiful, love what you wrote , & publicizing it - takes some guts. ❤️ I haven't been able to get this song out of my head this past wk, (my not so subconscious at work, no dout), so just listened to it here for 1st time in 20+ yrs. I can't think of a song w/a higher emotional impact that nails the sorrow & loss of falling out of love more poignantly.

This is the saddest realest song that I've ever heard. Almost everybody has gone through this and it hits the heart hard.
