I know what it was like for a athlete from a poor family in a small town where football was everything I started when I was twelve I was six feet and three hundred pounds at twelve my first year I started then I went to jr varsity i played my second year working and fighting tooth and nail by my third year of football i had my starting position and there was nobody coud have took it from mei was a monster I was fifteen sixfeet tall and three hundred pounds for some reason i never grew any taller but when i practiced aand worked out i was gaining sixty pounds every year during athletics but i was just fat i was hard my chest was hard my arms were twenty inch biceps no fat i just had some around my waist and body the rest was hard and my mindset was even harder when i touched the field nobody could touch me (my edge) and i believed it and everyone else did too even new york state college who had a scholarship coach said he was putting me up for all state defensive guard nose guard actually I was Soo ready to leave this bullshit place but next off season I was messing around with my brother having a jumping contest and came down wrong cracked my femur long ways and tore my left knee all too hell it wasn't two years later every one forgot who I was seem like

This is why I’m glad I had a real and raw father growing up. He taught me there is good, clean teenage boy trouble, and bad trouble that changes your life.

He explained good trouble is trying to skip a class here and there, or trying to sneak in the house after missing curfew. He explained sure you’ll get detention or get grounded, but that doesn’t change your life.

He explained bad trouble involves the law. And, if the law is involved, your life can and most likely will change for a long time.. selling drugs, robbing, weapons, etc.

He explained there is nothing cool in the hood if you have a record that follows you for life. Jobs are messed up, where you live are messed up, and you most likely will struggle until you die, or at the least until you get very old.

To my knowledge, paddles weren’t used in high school. I didn’t know if one player had bad grades, the whole team couldn’t play. They should have gotten that kid a tutor & worked on his grades instead of switching teachers. And talked to the team about how important keeping up good grades were. That coach (according to this movie) seemed like he was a good coach & really cared about the boys. Did no one notice at school when they started having money & dressing better than usual. So sad what having money & wanting more does to people. In high school I would have loved a 4 year full ride. As soon as they did their first robbery, they were locked in. It appeared so easy to them until they got caught. I don’t think it would have been the last. If they didn’t get caught, and needing money in college, I think they would have done it again. Would be interesting to see what their lives are like today. Doesn’t seem right after all the court battles and they won the state title to have it taken away 3 years later. I feel like it was because of the robberies. According to the movie, those were all after title was won. If it wasn’t meant to be, they should have never let the team play. Luckily the players not involved all kept their scholarships.

If the administration had held the one player accountable for his poor grades, if the guys playing craps had been kicked off the team, but they weren't held accountable for the small things. Not the best movie... very cliche and morally dubious in it's conclusions... no character development, relying entirely on stereotypes you have to establish any character, and way way way too many "inspirational" speeches and moments... those moments are great when they are rare and built up... but this movie it's in every scene. It's inspirational overkill. It's lacking in the character development to make these moments special. This movie is 2 hours of one long "win for the Gipper" speech. Overkill. And most movies have like maybe one music montage scene... this has like 7 of them... don't need character development or story when we can just advance time with a song. Fine once, maybe twice... this has like 12 scenes like this... the person who made this knows what makes a film... but they have no idea what makes a good film... Great actors, good true story and worthy of a film... just not this film... very poorly presented. Also... it doesn't really know what it wants to be... it starts off as a story about black kids falsely accused of cheating on a test, worries a little bit about a state football championship, for like 5 minutes in the middle, and then ends in a court room criminal expose of armed robberies... any one of these three things would make a fine film on it's own... but all together, it's just too much... all of this... too much. Not a good film. Very poorly made. It starts with the argument that black kids are getting screwed, and it ends with the same tone, arguing that these criminals are misunderstood. They committed multiple armed robberies. They are the bad guys. If you want to argue that some systemic situation turned them into criminals, this movie doesn't make that connection. The movie shows them committing the crimes... and then argues they are somehow screwed out of their future when the court finds them guilty. Ridiculous. They aren't victims.

Actually, you’re extremely incorrect in your assessment. By your critique, and this is my opinion, you’re either white and can’t relate to the message of the film, or you just lack comprehension AND lack of knowledge what a good l movie is.

I’ll start with the writing of the movie. Being it’s based off a true story, this was extremely well written. Adding actual clips from the time period was genius. It give you a nostalgia of actually being there when it happened. Not only from a football standpoint, but from the students and parents emotional standpoint! In other words, it wasn’t manufactured. Real people. Real students. Real parents!

As for the message? I think it was pretty clear, IF you can relate. Correction: the message is relatable to ALL people. The message is: the choices you make affect your life! It’s also a message of being a leader. The message relates to life. Not like a horror film with goblins and ghosts.

I grew up in the projects until I was 10 years old; while my father was going to law school. We moved out the project in the early 80’s, but as a kid that’s where my friends and cousins were. I hung out, but my father preached to me good trouble and bad trouble. He preached to keep your eyes open and when to walk away. I shot craps and C-Lo as a teenager, UNTIL I saw someone get shot over a point call. My decision was to not do it again over something silly. I wasn’t a street kid. That wasn’t my lifestyle even if I hung out on the projects with my cousins and friends. It was My a choice, MY decision. In other words, being a black kid from the hood, you’ll always be faced with these things. That’s what the whole movie is about. Kids with opportunity, but decisions messed it up! I became a D1 SEC full scholarship athlete, and became a lawyer at 22 years of age because of the opportunity my father provided for me, but mostly because of the decisions I made!!
