Since the band's inception, there have been over fifteen musicians in and out of King Diamond, with the only two mainstays being vocalist King Diamond and guitarist Andy LaRocque. In 1987 the band released their second studio release Abigail (their first concept album). Throughout the 1980s, King Diamond released a total of four studio albums. In the early 1990s, the band was put on hold when King Diamond reunited with his former outfit Mercyful Fate. After reforming King Diamond in 1994, Diamond would balance recording and touring with both Mercyful Fate and his eponymous band throughout the 90's. Since the early 2000s, King Diamond have kept recording and touring and, since 2014, the band has been composed of vocalist King Diamond, guitarist Andy LaRocque, guitarist Mike Wead, drummer Matt Thompson, and bassist Pontus Egberg.
Mother's Getting Weaker
King Diamond Lyrics

That bloody tea, which sent us into ecstasy
Yesterday Mother complained, feeling dizzy, all in pain
Mother's getting weaker, looking paler day by day
As morning came, she could not make it out of bed
And Grandma's spell was getting straight into her head
Getting weaker, looking paler day by day
Then Missy came in and she led me by the hand
I didn't want to go, Oh but I should have known
Mother was barely conscious, why should I care
Just looking forward to the next ordeal
I think I heard My sister begging me to stay
She gave me the phone, so I could call someone for help
I simply let go of her hand, then I cut the wire
Missy was crying as I left them both behind
And Mother's getting weaker, Missy shouted at
My back "I hate you"
The lyrics of "Mother's Getting Weaker" by King Diamond tell a dark and unsettling story about a family tea party that becomes increasingly eerie and fatal as the night wears on. The first verse sets the scene of a family enjoying their tea, but the second line reveals that this tea is somehow responsible for the ecstasy they feel. It is unclear whether this means they are actually ingesting a drug or potion, or if it is some sort of metaphor for the pleasure they derive from their time together. However, things take a disturbing turn when Mother begins to complain of dizziness and pain, setting the tone for the ominous events to come.
The second verse reveals that Mother's condition has worsened overnight, to the point that she cannot get out of bed. The suggestion is that this deterioration is due to the "spell" of the grandmother, which seems to have something to do with the tea. The lack of communication from Mother adds to the sense that something malevolent is taking place. The arrival of Missy, who leads the singer away, marks the point of no return. Despite his sister's desperate pleas for him to stay and call for help, the singer shows no empathy or concern for his mother, instead looking forward to the "next ordeal."
The final lines of the song are chilling, as Missy shouts "I hate you" at the singer as he leaves them behind. The suggestion is that his inaction or possibly even active participation in the harm being done to their mother has severed their relationship irreparably. The song as a whole is an example of King Diamond's flair for storytelling, as he weaves a tale of horror and family dysfunction that stays with the listener long after the music has ended.
