Hideaway
King Freddy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want you to be no slave
I don't want you to work all day
I don't want your money too
I just want to make love to you
love to you
love to you
love to you
I don't want you to wash my clothes
I don't want you to keep our home
I don't want you to be true
I just want to make love to you
love to you
love to you
love to you

I can tell by the way you switch and walk
I can tell by the way you baby talk
I can see by the way you treat your man
I can love you baby until it's a crying shame

I don't want you to cook my bread
I don't want you to make my bed
I don't want you cause I'm sad and blue
I just want to make love to you
love to you
love to you
love to you

I can tell by the way you switch and walk
I can tell by the way you baby talk
I can see by the way you treat your man
I can love you baby until it's a crying shame

I don't want you to cook my bread
I don't want you to make my bed
I don't want you cause I'm sad and blue
I just want to make love to you
love to you
love to you
love to you

Let me make love to you

Let me make love to you
Let me make love to you

Overall Meaning

In "Hideaway," King Freddy sings about a woman who he doesn't want to be a slave to him in any way. He doesn't want her to work all day or do any household chores, he doesn't even want her money. The only thing he desires is to make love to her. He can tell by the way she walks, talks, and treats her man that he could love her until it's a crying shame.

There is an interesting contrast in the lyrics between the prevailing cultural norms of the time and the singer's desires. In the 1960s, when the song was released, it was common for men to expect their female partners to do domestic work and to take on a subservient role in the relationship. King Freddy refuses to adhere to this norm and instead states that he doesn't want his love interest to be beholden to him in any way.
