Dear Abbie
Kinky Friedman gelesen von Wiglaf Droste Lyrics

(kinky friedman)

From a friend of yours in texas
Who's had a little trouble finding love.
I'm considered quite attractive
And I've always been quite active at the club.
But the life I lead's so lonesome
That I wonder, abbie, if you've ever known
What it's like to live in others' dreams
And never have a dream to call your own.
There's a divorcee in dallas,
There's a girl who's much too young in idaho.
London bridge is falling down
And the clergyman is out of town
And there's a daughter no one wants in buffalo.
And I'm wondering ¡®bout america,
Wondering if we lost more than the war.
I'm just wondering if there's any silver lining left
Behind the golden door.

And dear abbie, abbie I just had to write.
Dear abbie, abbie is there any love in sight?

Well, the last time that I saw you
You were living at the old chelsea hotel.
Even though it's been a while, hell
Even now it makes me smile
To think of how you tennis-shoed the bill.
And it seems like only yesterday
You fell off of the sea-saw and you cried
And your daddy lit the fireworks
In the backyard on the fourth day of july.

And dear abbie, abbie I just had to write,
Dear abbie, abbie, where are you tonight?

Overall Meaning

The song “Dear Abbie” by Kinky Friedman is a melancholic ballad of love gone awry, written from the perspective of someone who is struggling to find love, despite being attractive and active in social circles. The singer wonders if Abbie, the popular advice columnist of the 1960s and ‘70s, ever felt like living in others’ dreams without a dream of her own. The song mentions various people and places across America, including a divorcee in Dallas, a young girl from Idaho, a clergyman out of town, and an unwanted daughter in Buffalo. The singer is left wondering if America has lost more than the war, and if there is any hope left behind the golden door. It is a song of yearning, longing, and searching for love and meaning in life.

The song also contains reminiscence of Abbie’s past. The last time that the singer saw her, she was living at the old Chelsea Hotel. It brings back the memory of a cherished moment when Abbie tennis-shoed the bill, and another memory of her falling off the sea-saw and crying, while her father lit fireworks in the backyard on the fourth day of July. The song ends with the singer asking Abbie if there is any love in sight.

Such a beautiful song, and on a subject that most would hide in a closet. It is so relevant, more perhaps today than in the time it was written. Young girls today, in this society, it is so easy to get into this trap. I have seen so many lives being destroyed by this. Sad and nostalgic song...
