Devotion
Kitten Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It′s taboo, but you know you really drive me crazy
16, speaking to me like an angel

Should I tell him something to make my motives clear because I want you
Release me freely
If you can't feel the heat of my devotion

Do you remember the way you looked at me last night
If I ever could hold you in my arms
I would never tell you how this love still breaks my heart

Should I leave my number
Something to remember me
And if I′m not your lover
Then tell me what this really means
Should I leave my number
Am I the one that suffers
Is this love or just an opportunity?

Black tie
But now you know the party's over
And so it's goodnight
And everybody goes their separate ways

But can I tell you something
I′ll whisper in your ear
Because I want you
Release me, freely and you can feel the heat of my devotion

So say it with feeling if not with love
I′ll suffer the night until morning comes
Is this love or just an opportunity?

Should I leave my number
Something to remember me
And if I'm not your lover
Then tell me what this really means
Should I leave my number
Am I the one that suffers
Is this love or just an opportunity?

Should I leave my number
Am I the one that suffers
Is this what we do to each other?

Am I different from the others?
Is this love or just an opportunity?

Overall Meaning

In "Devotion," Kitten sings about her desire for someone who is seemingly unattainable. She starts off by acknowledging that her attraction to this person is taboo, but cannot help that they drive her crazy. She is 16 and feels like this person is an angel speaking to her. She wonders if she should be more upfront about her intentions to make it clear that she wants them. She wants to be released freely by them but also acknowledges that they may not feel the heat of her devotion. Kitten reminisces about the way this person looked at her the night before and how she wishes she could hold them in her arms.

Despite her desire for this person, she also acknowledges the reality of the situation. The party is over, and everyone is going their separate ways. Kitten wonders what this all means for them. She asks if she should leave her number, and if she's the only one suffering in this situation. She questions whether what they have is love or just an opportunity. Kitten continues to struggle with her emotions, wondering if she's different from others, and if this is love or just a fleeting chance.

The lyrics in this song are relatable to anyone who has experienced unrequited love or has found themselves attracted to someone who is unattainable. It shows the vulnerability one can feel when expressing their emotions and the uncertainty that comes with it. The lyrics cover themes of love, unrequited love, and the struggle to understand one's emotions.
