Wells' success in the 1950s and 1960s was so enormous that she still ranks as the sixth most successful female vocalist in the history of the Billboard country charts according to historian Joel Whitburn's book "The Top 40 Country Hits", behind Dolly Parton, Loretta Lynn, Reba McEntire, Tammy Wynette, and Tanya Tucker. Wells was the third country music artist, behind Roy Acuff and Hank Williams, to receive the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991 as well as being the seventh woman and first Caucasian woman to receive the honor. In 1976, she was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Than to run around all over town with somebody new
I'd rather stay home, forgotten and blue
Than to look for fun with anyone but you
There's nothing to be glad about, since you went away
So what the use to get about pretending I'm gay
My tears are too real for smiles to conceal
I'd rather stay home and cry over you
Than to run around all over town with somebody new
I'd rather stay home, forgotten and blue
Than to look for fun with anyone but you
There's nothing to be glad about, since you went away
So what the use to get about pretending I'm gay
My tears are too real for smiles to conceal
I don't want to roam, I'd rather stay home
Kitty Wells's song "I'd Rather Stay Home" is an emotional ballad about a heartbroken person who would rather stay home and cry over their lost love than to try to find someone new to fill the void in their life. The song begins by expressing the singer's reluctance to go out and start dating again. Instead, they would rather be at home, reminiscing about the past and crying over their lost love. The chorus repeats these sentiments, emphasizing the singer's commitment to their feelings of sadness and their devotion to their lost love.
The second verse describes the futility of trying to pretend to be happy after a breakup. The singer realizes that their tears are too real to be hidden behind smiles, and they don't want to go out and try to replace what they lost. The final repetition of the chorus drives home the point that the singer is content being alone and miserable, as long as they are true to themselves and their feelings.
The song is poignant in its simplicity, expressing a universal feeling of heartbreak and the desire to wallow in it rather than move on. It is a testament to the power of music to capture the profound emotions that we experience in our lives and the empathy it can inspire in listeners.
