(Shouldn't there be, uh, some noise there?)

Super Bowl Sunday Two-Thousand-Twenty
I did not feel well
Leaving the hotel
Said my goodbye to a big dollar bill
See you again at the reading of the will
Sherwood forest ranger retires
Falconers complex and diners on fire

It's not fair to me
Strung out on the back of your ATV
Throwing dead birds into the air
Singing, "Howdy neighbors, how do you like my new ride?"
And now I can see that after spending some time apart

That's the cost of
Doing business
That's the price for healthy horses

Big decisions, cooler return shows
Error revisions
Tell me that it's too close

I don't wanna test you out
But can you break this back off the jukebox, Jody?
They've got big ideas about police and fees and graduate degrees
And I'm just trying to visualize some laundry on the line

(Hello?)

It's my funeral for the angels like you
I get carried away
In the wake of the naked you
Now I'm setting off by northeast learning object permanence of down

I am not American, but I feel the beat sometimes
When I run into the screen door at the retreat
Trying to learn the new lines
Backwards, forwards, backwards, forwards
Through the old Racquet Club archway

Tennis anyone again?
I was never one for trying to win as it seems

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Cooler Returns by Kiwi jr. describes the singer’s experience on Super Bowl Sunday in 2020. The singer doesn’t feel well and leaves a hotel, saying goodbye to a large dollar bill, presuming that he will see it again at the reading of a will. The next line describes the retirement of a Sherwood forest ranger as well as a bigger issue, the Falconers’ complex and diners on fire. In the chorus, the singer proclaims that it’s not right that he’s strung out on the back of someone’s ATV, throwing dead birds into the air and singing “howdy neighbors, how do you like my new ride?” In the next verse, the singer is reflecting on spending some time apart and how it can be the cost of doing business or the price for healthy horses. The lines that follow describe how some things have errors but are just too close. Finally, the singer is trying to visualize some laundry on the line while others are talking about police, fees, and graduate degrees.

Overall, the song seemingly addresses themes of mortality, change, and old versus new. The Sherwood forest ranger’s retirement and diners on fire signify change and the passing of time. In the chorus, the singer’s experience on an ATV with dead birds contrasts with his desire for peace and simplicity, represented by laundry on the line. Ultimately, the singer seems to be trying to navigate an overwhelming world, trying to figure out what to care about and how to live with so much noise and confusion.
