Born in Kisangani, Democratic Republic of Congo to a Congolese mother and Ghanaian father, Koffi grew up in Kinshasa.
He went to France to study , while in Paris, he began playing the guitar and writing songs. On his return to Congo he was a member of Viva la Musica, Papa Wemba's band. Koffi repopularized the slower style of soukous, which had fallen out of fashion. He dubbed this style Tcha Tcho, and it gained popularity outside Congo. Koffi's music can be quite controversial, taking on current events and topics considered taboo in some conservative societies. He has also participated in the salsa music project Africando.

The lyrics to Koffi Olomide’s song Heros National explores the concept of a divided world, of a global society that is grappling with a host of challenges that threaten the very fabric of humanity. The song touches upon a wide range of issues that mirror the divide between the haves and the have-nots, between those propelled by greed and avarice and those on the margins of society struggling to survive in a world that has become increasingly hostile and indifferent to their plight. The lyrics are a forceful critique of the world order, a powerful indictment of a world that is driven by materialism, consumerism and the quest for instant gratification.
The song speaks about the idea of a world that is divided between different regions and cultures, each driven by their own unique set of values and aspirations. It references the Arab world and the struggles of its people, invoking the image of a world in which the cries of the oppressed are silenced, and the struggles of the marginalized are ignored. The song also talks about Congo and its people, celebrating their resilience and courage in the face of adversity. The lyrics are a powerful call to action, urging listeners to come together and fight against injustice and oppression, to stand up and be counted as part of a global community united in its determination to make the world a better place for all.
