White Noise
Kojaque Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm just a north side, DC baby
Me mammy raised me by the horse ridin'
Council housing, crisis, crazy
When the sun's out
Sons come knockin' teeth for change
I hope it comes soon
'Cause I don't know you but know your cousin
Die a new day
Where you from?
Yeah where ya from?
Yeah where's your head rest?
That's two steps the wrong direction
Don't you be here
Say that postcode wrong
I wanna break you
'Cause my home's broken there isn't love and
I'll equate you
Take you down like mathematics
When the shoes break, we tie loose ends
Toss the fuckers on the phone line
I hope you come late night to pick the green up
Take your money and break your teeth
Just like my dreams were
Night they came and tossed my mother in the four door
Wheeled her off, my foster parents couldn't control me
Smoke them trees inside the Civic with the doors locked
It's nature, nurture
It's a habit, it's a routine
Weekly stand offs in the streets with Síochána
Guard the peace but lock me up just for the peace tree
Read my rights so what's the crime
Intent to smoke that?
Half gram baggie
I couldn't supply myself a blowback
Who'd come buying from me?
They wanna trump the charge up
"Just one more knacker up off the streets"
That's what they say right?
Read my rights they wanna kill me 'cause an accent
Hold that purse a little tighter when I ask them
'What's the time?'
My court proceedings weighing on me
'Cause I had dreams of upping sticks and jumpin' countries
Took that from my hands like when my ma left
Fuck that stress, I don't need love, I need the dope man
Fuck the meds, I don't need that, I need to smoke man
Fuck the plebs, the rich are culling off the piss poor
Peep the news, just in, this public discourse
Is race horse pissin' up on the steps of the cathedral
Sovereign state they'd rather see my mother bleed out
Than build a clinic
You leave abortions to the back streets
If we need it, we're gonna get it
Fuck the hand-outs
Give tax breaks to smarmy fuckers in the grey suits
Leave me starvin' tryna find a source of income
Can't pull cockles from out the Liffey
Dollymount Strand is too polluted
I'm just a fish, I'm tryna breath air
In plain sight then everybody watch me drown now
White thrash
White noise
You just ignore it 'til it drowns out
It's never gonna drown out
I'm never gonna drown out

"...Gardai have issued an appeal for information
Regarding an act of vandalism carried out on a local
Delicatessen on the north side of Dublin City. The
Incident occurred around 4am on Saturday morning
CCTV footage obtained from the shop front shows

Two men attempting several times to throw a large
Plastic Ice-cream cone through the shop window..."

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Kojaque’s “White Noise” paint a vivid picture of a gritty, urban environment rife with poverty, violence, and drug use. The song details the struggles of a young man raised in difficult circumstances on the North Side of Dublin, Ireland. Over a haunting, minimalistic beat, Kojaque raps about the council housing, violence, and drug culture that permeate his community. He describes the constant threat of violence, even from people he doesn’t know, and the despair that comes with the realization that his home is broken, with no love to be found. Throughout the song, Kojaque touches on a range of societal issues in Ireland, such as the lack of access to healthcare and the struggles of the working poor, while painting a picture of a city that is trying to break him down.

One of the key themes of “White Noise” is the contrast between the haves and have-nots, with Kojaque describing the rich “culling off the piss poor” while they rake in tax breaks. He touches on the absurdity of the government leaving working-class residents to fend for themselves while the wealthy pull the strings. The song ends on a melancholy note, with Kojaque lamenting that he is “just a fish, tryna breath[e] air,” a poignant metaphor for a young man struggling to stay afloat in a world that doesn’t seem to care about him.
