Cul de Sac
Komeda Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you take the road you're likely to take,
You will surely arrive where you began, and be the same
The soul is lovesick, though the world (is sorry).
Only knowing the moral law, the authority
Saying you must obey like Mr. K *
It's been like this for ages, of course
Like this for ages to come
(Plato) mumbo-jumbo mockery
And maybe I won't (live here) anymore
Empty is my house to the core
Maybe I won't live like this anymore
You lived your life in this house not knowing every floor
Looking for someone's help, but no one came

(Would) it be like this for ages to come
Like this for ages to come

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Komeda's song Cul de Sac are a reflection on the nature of conformity and the crushing effects it can have on individuality. The first two lines acknowledge the cyclical nature of life, emphasizing that if one follows the same path as everyone else, they will inevitably end up where they started, having gained nothing.

The following line, "The soul is lovesick, though the world (is sorry)" hints at the singer's disillusionment with the world around them, that they are feeling a deep sense of longing for something more, something different, that the world cannot provide. The mention of the "moral law, the authority" suggests that there is a societal pressure to conform to certain standards, to obey those in power, without questioning or challenging their decisions.

"Maybe I won't (live here) anymore, Empty is my house to the core," suggests a desire to break free from the cycle of conformity, to abandon the "house" of one's previous life and start anew. The final line, "Looking for someone's help, but no one came," reinforces the idea that the singer feels alone in their struggle against conformity, that no one else has dared to question the status quo.

Overall, the lyrics of Cul de Sac are a call to action against conformity, a rallying cry for individuality and independence.

Hello Komeda, I am still enjoying your music in 2021

Björn Hessle

"Cul de sac" means dead end in french, but most of all it's a early movie by Polanski. "Simple formality", another track on the album, is a movie WITH Polanski. And "Komeda" is taken from composer of the music to Polanskis early movies, Krystiof Komeda...

I can't believe I saw them open up for Ben Folds Five at a heavy metal bar in San Antonio, TX....circa 1997.
