I Can't Answer That

Why should I care, it doesn't mean a thing to me
I know that St. Tropes is never very far
But what I don't know is, how near we are
You know I've always had the money here to pay the rent
You know I wanna believe
But if you stay or go there's one thing that you oughta know
If you really want it
Show me that you need it
Will I still believe it
Well, I can't answer that
Will we stay together
Change is like the weather
Will it be forever
Well, I can't answer that
I know Picasso painted memories in blue
What does it matter, 'cause he never painted you
I knew a king who had to set his people free
But what I don't know is, do you need me
If you would only tell me what it is I need to know
Then maybe we'll make a start
You keep me waiting, I'm an understudy in the show
Are you too scared of your heart
If you really want it
Show me that you need it
Will I still believe it
Well, I can't answer that
Will we stay together
Change is like the weather
Will it be forever
Well, I can't answer that
You know I'll always have the money here to pay the rent
You know I wanna believe
But if you stay or go there's one thing that you oughta know
That it's a sin to deceive
If you really want it
Show me that you need it
Will I still believe it
Well, I can't answer that
Will we stay together
Change is like the weather
Will it be forever
Well, I can't answer that
If you really want it
Show me that you need it
Will I still believe it
Well, I can't answer that
Will we stay together
Change is like the weather
Will it be forever
Well, I can't answer that
Will it be forever
Well, I can't answer that
The lyrics to Kon Kan's "I Can't Answer That" are essentially about the uncertainty of love and relationships. The singer begins by stating their knowledge of seemingly trivial or unrelated facts, such as Beethoven's symphony in B or the proximity of St. Tropes, but notes that they do not know how close they are to their partner. They express their financial stability and desire to believe in their partner, but stress the importance of honesty because deception is a sin. The singer then poses a series of questions about the future of their relationship and acknowledges their inability to answer them definitively, hence the title of the song.
The lyrics utilize a lot of references to famous historical figures and artistic works, such as Picasso's blue period and a king who fought for freedom, as well as generalizations about the nature of change and uncertainty. However, these examples are used more as a way to emphasize the singer's lack of understanding of their own relationship, leaving them unable to answer important questions about its future. Ultimately, the song is an exploration of the unpredictable nature of human emotions and the difficulty of finding real, lasting love.
