In 1985, Kristofferson joined fellow country artists Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash in forming the country music supergroup The Highwaymen, and formed a key creative force in the outlaw country music movement that eschewed the Nashville music machine in favor of independent songwriting and producing. In 2004, Kristofferson was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. As an actor, he is known for his roles in Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid (1973), Blume in Love (1973), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), A Star Is Born (1976) (which earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor), Convoy (1978), Heaven's Gate (1980) and Blade (1998).
Kristofferson has said that he would like the first three lines of Leonard Cohen's "Bird on the Wire" on his tombstone:
Like a bird on the wire
Like a drunk in a midnight choir
I have tried in my way to be free
For The Good Times

I know it's over
But life goes on
And this old world will keep on turning
Let's just be glad
We had some time to spend together
There's no need to watch the bridges
That were burning
Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body
Close to mine
Hear the whisper of the rain drops
Blowing soft against the window
And make believe you love me
One more time
For the good times
I'll get along
You'll find another
And I'll be here
If you should find you ever need me
Don't say a word about tomorrow
Or forever
There'll be time enough for sadness
When you leave me
Lay your head upon my pillow
Hold your warm and tender body
Close to mine
Hear the whisper of the rain drops
Blowing soft against the window
And make believe you love me
One more time
The lyrics to Kris Kristofferson's song "For The Good Times" speak to the bittersweet nature of ending a relationship. The singer acknowledges that the relationship is over, but tries to find comfort in the fact that they were able to share some good times together. The first verse encourages the other person not to look sad, and acknowledges that even though the relationship is over, life will continue. The singer tries to find a silver lining in the situation, saying that there's no need to dwell on the past or the bridges that were burned.
The second verse is more focused on the present moment. The singer invites the other person to lay their head on his pillow and hold them close. The sound of raindrops against the window provides a peaceful soundtrack to their last moment together. The singer asks the other person to make believe they love him one more time, for the good times. These lines are particularly poignant, as they suggest that even though the relationship is ending, there were still some moments of happiness worth remembering.
