Rainbow Road
Kris Kristofferson & Friends Lyrics

All my life I've had hard working hands
But I sang my song as I carried my load
'Cause I had a dream about rainbow
Rainbow road
Then one day a man came along
Heard me playing and singing my songs
Sent me on my way down rainbow
Rainbow road
Then one night a man with a knife
Pushed me 'til I had to take his life
Fast as falling all my friends were gone
That old judge traded me a sentence for a song
Now I'm living with this ball and chain
I had to wear a number before they ever heard my name
And like the dream I'm growing old
But we still sing about rainbow
Rainbow road
Rainbow road, Rainbow road [Repeat x 2]
Kris Kristofferson's "Rainbow Road" depicts the journey of a poor man who has always had to work hard to get by. Despite this, he always had a dream of living a better life, a dream that he associated with a โrainbow roadโ. Eventually, his music caught the attention of a man who listened to him playing and singing his songs, and this man paid off all his debts and helped him pursue his dream. However, the song takes a tragic turn when the man is forced to take someoneโs life in self-defense and is sentenced to prison, where he lives with a ball and chain. Yet, the dream of the rainbow road remains with him, and he sings about it even as he grows old.
The song offers a poignant message about the pursuit of dreams and how they can still persist even when things take a more difficult turn. The song has been interpreted in various ways, some seeing it as a reflection of Kristoffersonโs personal journey in making it as a musician, while others see it as a broader allegory of the hope and resilience of the human spirit.

The scene was a small roadside cafe
The waitress was sweepin' the floor
Two truck drivers drinkin' their coffee
And two okie kids by the door
How much are them candies, they asked her
How much have you got, she replied
We've only a penny between us
Them's two for a penny, she lied
And the daylight grew heavy with thunder
And the smell of the rain on the wind
Ain't it just like a human
Here comes that rainbow again
One truck driver called to the waitress
After the kids went outside
Them candies ain't two for a penny
So what's it to you, she replied
In silence they finished their coffee
Got up and nodded goodbye
She called, hey, you left too much money
So what's it to you, they replied
And the daylight grew heavy with thunder
And the smell of the rain on the wind
Ain't it just like a human
Here comes that rainbow again

@Xine999 In 2017 I was inspired to write a poem/song that began, โIโd rather hear this old frog sing out his songs with soul, Than to hear some perfectionist play empty rich n roll.โ Well, by a miracle, Krisโ manger found out about the poem and requested my permission to show it to Kris. A few weeks later, I got a phone call from Lisa, Krisโ wife. Kris was sleeping in the back of their bus, but heโd asked Lisa to call and let me know how encouraging the poem was to him. Miracles do happen!

Man what a beautiful song by probably the greatest songwriter of ANY period of time! John Prine is a very close second if not neck and neck with him. They both can bring me to tears equally. Damnitt man!
