Clean Slate
Kyler England Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

i got this box of letters
they all start off the same
how could you do this to me?

the ink's been dry for sometime
i just never sent them
i couldn't write the last line
but now i've got it right

it's too late for a clean slate
don't try to make it up to me
let's make a clean break
you don't have to owe me anything
cause i don't wanna owe you anything anymore

i lost another friend today
this time it was my fault
i was too wrapped up to see

she was crashing she was reaching
she was losing everything
it brought back such bad memories
when she said to me

it's too late for a clean slate
don't try to make it up to me
let's make a clean break
you don't have to owe me anything
cause i don't wanna owe you anything anymore

i know we hurt each other but can't we work it out?
i realize you're the kind of friend that i can't live without

is it too late for a clean slate?
tell me how to make it up to you
i made a mistake
i know that you don't owe me anything
but i was hoping we could start again

is it too late for a clean slate?
tell me how to make it up to you
i made a mistake
i know that you don't owe me anything
but i was hoping we could start again

could we start again?

Overall Meaning

Kyler England's song Clean Slate is about the aftermath of a failed relationship and the desire for a fresh start. The singer begins the verse by describing a box of unsent letters all beginning with the same phrase: "how could you do this to me?" The letters were written some time ago, but the singer couldn't bring herself to finish them. However, now she has gotten it right and is ready to move on.

The chorus echoes this sentiment of starting anew, but with a recognition that it's too late for a clean slate. The singer requests a clean break and asserts that she doesn't want to owe the other person anything anymore. She acknowledges their mutual hurt and the inability to fix it, and the chorus ends with a question: "is it too late for a clean slate?"

In the second verse, the singer recounts the loss of another friend due to her own neglect. The friend was reaching out for help, but the singer was too wrapped up in herself to notice until it was too late. The memory of this loss makes the singer question whether it's too late for a clean slate with the person from the failed relationship. Can they work it out?

Overall, the song has a somber tone with an underlying sense of hope. The singer recognizes her mistakes and wants to make amends, but also acknowledges the impossibility of a completely fresh start.

@jezkn

Yeah - she  could and definately should have made it. She don't need no band. She has a voice to die for. Totally unique and instantly recognisable - that cuts deep and turns you inside out. Just needs that special song. Why is she so unknown ????
