I surely agree with you that following your natural breath is a great way to feel relaxed and get into a sweet meditation... unfortunately, as the vast majority of us have aged aged, our breaths have become shallow and faster than it used to be from birth due to our societal surroundings. I also used to breathe the same.
It took a couple of different modalities to help me see that I needed to change my breathing patterns for both what I was doing at the time and my future health...
I was running very long distance races, learning, making, and teaching meditation along with taking my freediving off to yet another level. All had to do with my breath. Releasing how to breathe properly as a child does when first coming into this life and to take deeper slower breaths changed a bit of my life alone. Not to mention that it's also proven to add up to 5 years to a person's life.
Most every grown person takes very shallow quick breaths , 20 or more times a minute and they also breath into their upper body . You might notice how an athlete or someone who has just put out a lot physical energy and is breathing fast... their shoulders raise up and down... if you watch a baby, a singer , someone who plays a wind instrument, their breathing movement comes from the belly or diaphragm area, which is the proper healither way to breath.
It takes a little bit of time and practice but very quickly it does become very natural and comfortable. I never realized by purposefully changing my breathing habits to suit the modalities that I was learning it became natural for my body to take the slower deeper breaths...
Also breathing through our noses is the way we were designed to breath, but that's easy to look up on line... I still need to think that one through when im really pushing body limits while exercising . But its getting easier and better...
My Breath now is maybe 6 to 8 relaxing breaths per minute. It took someone else to notice that in me...
As simple as it is breathing is one of the most important ways to better health and longevity...
I'm also a lung cancer survivor who was given 4 to six months to live over 20 years ago and never used modern tech to heal it... chemo etc... I now have a 6:22 minute static breath hold and 150 ft underwater freediving is my comfort level and where I do my best meditations.
I do feel blessed with every breath...
Sorry for the long rant, first time I've ever posted like this... hope you have a great day and a beautiful new year... g

Thankyou for acknowledging TAKE A DEEP BREATHE. I have been following this podcast for the past few years. I use this particular episode with my high school school students in the afternoons. What a change it makes to the lesson. The students are surreptitiously grateful for a moment to stop.

Dr Andrew Huberman, about your observation on you not breathing at that cadence and breathing quite a bit faster, have you heard about "ujjayi breathing" where you slightly constrict the airways (in the throat) when exhaling? I automatically tend to do that when I am consciously performing deep breathing exercises. In fact, I deliberately tried to NOT do that and exhale normally while following along during this video. I too noticed I exhaled much faster. It was easier for me to follow along and maintain the rhythm when exhaling as I would in ujjayi breathing.

Amazing how quickly the lungs 🫁, heart,🫀diaphragm, vagus nerve, brain 🧠 and all the neurons in between work in split second synchronization. I’m in awe! 🤩 Thank you Andrew for explaining how breathing works in previous podcasts. 😮‍💨
