@MrOmer NL it means that every gear change sounds the same. In reality, every gear has a different ratio which increases the load which means the engine revs slower and sounds different as the load on the engine increases. Aerodynamic drag adds to this effect.

Cheers! The sound side is speakers, I use Darlington array ICs to switch 12 volts to them, I think this video uses a speaker per cylinder in two speaker boxes, one per bank. The pulse I send to the speakers is the same length for all RPM. No code to share at this stage.

All of the straights are pretty basic, except for the straight-6, I've never heard of it: S-3 is 1-2-3, S-4 is 1-2-4-3, S-5 is 1-2-4-5-3, and S-6 is 1-5-3-6-2-4.
The Vs are interesting, especially the V-6s and V-8s, they have different firing orders for 60 and 90 degree engines: 60° V-6 is 1L-1R-2L-2R-3L-3R, 90° V-6 is 1L-1R-3L-3R-2L-2R (exactly like your hypothetical T-plane V-6, which is my favorite), 60° V-8 is 1L-1R-4L-2R-2L-3L-3R-4R, 90° V-8 is 1L-1R-4L-2L-2R-3L-3R-4R, 90° V-10 is 1L-1R-5L-5R-2L-2R-3L-3R-4L-4R, and 60° V-12 is 1L-2R-5L-4R-3L-1R-6L-5R-2L-3R-4L-6R (the Toyota V-12 you made earlier, the 1GZ-FE I think).
The Flats are outta my league, I don't study those enough: F-4 is 1L-2L-1R-2R (a LLRR Flat 4?), and the F-6 is 1L-3R-2L-1R-3L-2R.
I used L and R for the V and Flat engines to minimize confusion. If you want, I can list numbers instead of that. Just let me know!

@JΩHN I think I've done an I3 like that, my flatplane I4s are all 1 4 3 2, my I6 is 1 5 3 6 2 4, think i've covered both of those V6 directions, I've done one flatplane 60 dgeree V8 and one crossplane 60 degree V8. Boxer 4s have to fire LLRR, mine does. I've only done one flat 6. Firing order doesn't make much difference to sound, but firing interval does.

I considered showing the field windings/whatever in a Tesla with some kind of future noise but the motors are a bit complex (but not in the way I am interested in) for me to learn how they work. With my setup all I4 firing orders would sound pretty much the same (for a flatplane crankshaft anyway)

maybe you could try printing a set of header and collector pipes that fit on the speakers and merge into an exhaust. then you could even experiment with different exhaust types. the only problem could be, that a speaker moves the air mass back and forth and an engine pumps air (with a bit of back pressure waves), so the outcome would be uncertain.

else you could somehow try to change the pitch for every speaker outlet. i assume youre recording off a microphone pointed at the setup right ?
