L.P. Lyrics

A broken thumb
Since you asked
I haven't won
I look at you
Reflecting me
I'm seeing two
Can't recognize me
That I see don't fit
What I see in
In my dreams, no no
Picking me out
Just to tear me down
If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection
If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection
If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection
I pick my flaws
They sure look nice
Without your claws
Around my thighs
I cut the noose
Tied around my throat
But back I look
My reflection still revolts
The reflection
That I see don't fit
What I see in
In my dreams, no no
Picking me out
Just to tear me down
If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection
If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection
If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection
Open up and down the hatch
Fill your cup
No turning back
Pinch my skin
I fantasize
If I was different
Would they tantalize?
But I don't need your reflection in my mirror
My lonesome is making my thoughts clear
I'm much closer than I appear
I'm no toy and you aren't my puppeteer
Beautiful thighs
Quick witted tongue
It's in my eyes
I've finally won
If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection
If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection
The lyrics of L.P.'s song "Reflections" delve into themes of self-reflection, inner struggles, and breaking free from negative self-perceptions. The imagery of shattered glass, broken thumbs, and feeling like one has not achieved victory suggests a sense of fragmentation and vulnerability. The singer is describing a feeling of disconnection between their true self and the reflection they see in the mirror. Despite their efforts to reconcile the two, they feel a deep sense of discord.
The refrain "If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection" encapsulates the desire to break free from the constraints of self-doubt and criticism. The act of physically cutting away at one's reflection symbolizes a yearning for inner transformation and a rejection of external judgments. The singer struggles with accepting their flaws and feeling judged by others, leading to a desire to escape from this cycle of self-criticism.
The lyrics also touch upon the idea of societal expectations and the pressure to conform to certain standards of beauty or behavior. The mention of cutting the noose around the throat and breaking free from the claws that hold them down alludes to a metaphorical struggle against external forces that seek to control or define the singer. It conveys a sense of empowerment and a refusal to be defined by others' perceptions.
In the final verses, there is a shift towards self-acceptance and empowerment. The singer asserts their independence and declares that they do not need validation from others. By acknowledging their own worth and inner strength, they reclaim their autonomy and defy societal norms that seek to shape their identity. The repetition of the line "If I could, I'd take scissors to my own reflection" reinforces the theme of self-liberation and the journey towards self-acceptance and empowerment.
