Tokyo Sunrise
L.P. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Said a lot of words along the way
I meant them all while we reigned
But shores of love get beaten by the waves and after it was done I wish I'd saved time
One less spark from a flame
One more heart beat away
I think I lost your scent after the rain I'll find you when our paths cross by the gold mines

Ooooh ooooh oooooh

Where you gonna go
Where you gonna go
I can tell you that
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh yeah
Some day in the sky we'll see the same sun on the rise yeah
Wherever you go
Far as Tokyo
I can say...
I'll see you again
I'll see you again
I'll see you again
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh ohhhh oh

Aching with a debt never paid
Horses broken displayed
Breathing half a breath since you're away
But While your blood is warm I'll keep the home fires

Ooooh ooooh oooooh

Where you gonna go
Where you gonna go
I can tell you that
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh yeah
Some day in the sky we'll see the same sun on the rise yeah
Wherever you go
Far as Tokyo
I can say...
I'll see you again
I'll see you again

I'll see you again
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh ohhhh oh

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of L.P.'s song "Tokyo Sunrise" convey a poignant message of longing for connection and the need to maintain relationships that have been lost. The opening lines reflect on the power of words in a relationship, implying that the singer had put in the effort to communicate with their loved one, but that their efforts ultimately did not prove sufficient in weathering the tides of their love. The line, "But shores of love get beaten by the waves," suggests that despite their best efforts, their connection was ultimately overwhelmed, and the relationship ended.

The chorus expresses a sense of shared destiny, with the singer acknowledging that they may not know where their loved one is going, but expressing hope that they will see one another again, and that regardless of where they end up, they will see the same sun rise. There is a sense of hopefulness in these lines, despite the melancholic undercurrent of longing that runs through the rest of the song.

The second verse continues this theme of longing and loss, with the singer contrasting the warmth and flame of their affection with the sudden absence they feel now that their loved one is gone. The line, "Horses broken displayed," could be interpreted as a metaphor for the emotional fallout of their relationship or perhaps a literal reference to horses on display in a museum, representing something beautiful that was lost in the past. The final lines, "While your blood is warm, I'll keep the home fires," suggest that the singer is willing to wait for their loved one, holding onto the hope that they may eventually return.

Overall, "Tokyo Sunrise" touches on themes of connection, loss, and hope, with LP's powerful voice and evocative lyrics providing a moving tribute to the complex emotions that arise in relationships.

This is one of the most brilliantly written songs I have ever heard. She's using a 7 count measure for the chorus and versus, throws in a single 8 count bridge, and then tosses in a 3/4 waltz count towards the end. I LOVE LP!

This song reminds my of my parents love. My dad passed away from cancer almost 10 years ago and my mum ached to be with him every day. She made the most and enjoyed life. Myself, my daughter and my mum traveled to our home country where we met long lost family and learned our heritage. It was an amazing time. We spoke about my dad everyday like he was with us. But through it all she ached.
My mum passed away last week and although I feel like my heart is ripped open again I take comfort in knowing my parents are together again at last.
Mummy.....
Daddy......
Someday in the sky we'll see the same sun on the rise. I'll see you again.
Until then I will LIVE, LOVE and LEARN just like you taught me.

Sorry for your loss. Hugs to you.

I can't even think about this song without wanting to cry. It's pure love and beauty unbound in the sky.
