Oh, I’d say they’re very comparable to each other right alongside others like Caruso, Corelli, Di Stefano, Bjorling, and all the others of their respective times. Goodness, you should see how Roberto Alagna sings this in 1995, it’s simply glorious to listen to. It’s a generational things, but one thing is for sure, each and every one of them will join the pantheon of the truly greats rather than simply the popular of their times. Ray Chen is a popular violinist, but he’s not great, not like Perlman or Oistrakh. He’s just a young sensation, but people will eventually see that his sound doesn’t match his technical skills.

I was ten years old when Mario Lanza died and my whole family knew who he was, loved his music and listened to him. I remember being so very sad to hear that he died. His music brought great joy to so many people and he left us way too young.

Barbara Glaspy: When a teenager, in the early morning I would put on my mom's LPs of Mario Lanza Christmas Carols, George Beverly Shea, the Chuck Wagon Gang, as part of my worship time with God. I remember being transfixed by Lanza's voice, it's powerful, earnest longing for God. That has stayed with me, always.( PS: I ended up marrying an Italian. Sigmund Freud would have had a field day :)

I've listened to Mario from the age of nine, I'm now 69 years old, his voice and passion still brings a lump to my throat . One commenter said, Mario should have done more opera, and I totally agree with that sentiment.

His early death was partly responsible for that. After he had been heard by - an absolutely astounded - Ricardo Vitale (director of the Rome Opera) in the scenes for Aida, recorded in the house for the film 'For the First Time', it looked as if Lanza's ambition to return to the opera stage would at last be fulfilled. Vitale had been so impressed that he offered Lanza a contract to open the 1960 Rome Opera season, with any opera of his choice. Contractual negotiations for this were going ahead when Lanza tragically died. Who knows what might have been.

In 1949, the 28-year-old tenor’s rendition of Che Gelida Manina from La Bohème was voted Operatic Recording of the year by the U.S. National Critics Association. Lanza was to reprise that song in the film The Great Caruso.
Lanza’s voice was a perfectly placed lirico spinto of extended range (low A to high D) with a luscious baritone quality, which made him sound oh, so masculine (unlike most modern tenors whose voices are shrill, weak, or strained). Mario could sing through all three registers effortlessly, without conspicuous gear change. His voice was big, it was resonant, it was beautiful. With a richer, clearer, sweet, lyrical voice full of emotion, Mario Lanza touched the heart. I love him so much!!

When I was about eight years old, There was no T.V. .. so, My mom took me to the cinema regularly, one evening we saw "the toast of new orleans" .. Kath Grayson was warblimg "Be my love" and then Mario jumps on the stage to join in ... at the sound of his terrific, beautiful voice, the whole cinema let out a communal gasp of astonishment ... that's something I'll always remember .. made me want to be a singer, although I only ever managed minor pop group status

He died 7 days before I was born yet he was a huge part of my childhood. My mom had all his albums, watched his movies any time they were on TV and later on the VCR. Because of him I grew up loving opera. And he’s a legacy I passed on to my own kids.

Lanza had one of the most beautiful male voices in history and he was a superstar. It´s ridiculous to debate what would have happened if he´d taken another path. He on top of some artists (Kathryn Grayson, Jeanette McDonald, Moira Shearer....) made opera, ballet and classical music familiar to millions who would never have attended a theatrical performance through their movies. They all have their well deserved place in musical history.

I love his voice. I have had the Great Caruso along time, so I recognize the scenes. I just bought the DVD of the movie Because you are mine for $5.00 including shipping. Another fantastic movie of Mario Lanza. I ran the sound through my analog stereo. I was so at aw with that voice. I am watching again today

I have been brought up with Mario since I was knee high ,my wee mammy loved him and she died at the hands of a drunk driver in 1974 and we all still love her Mario lanza xx

When I was a kid, my father used to sing opera in the living room with his records. A lot of them Mario. I have to admit it, my dad had a voice almost as good. He passed in 1972 at the age of 48. Noone will ever sing like Mario. After hearing hum sing an aria, no one else can do the same arias justice

For one thing...he sings it in the right key. Most great tenors lower it 1/2 a tone, which is far easier.
Even Pavarotti and Corelli lowers it!

Almost every day..."The Great Caruso"...and now I thank God I got that movie for my mam....my good precious mam. It gave her so much joy. Just about every day she would watch that movie and her eyes would light up. "Is'nt he lovely" she would say (meaning Mario Lanza) I gave her the DVD for her 86th birthday....less than 2 months after her 87th birthday she died. So much joy we experienced together watching "The Great Caruso"....now she is gone. I cant take it in. I miss her so much.MAMXX

I'm happy that he was a popular as he was, otherwise there would be no record of his extraordinary voice. There are those that said his technique was flawed and that he lacked discipline. Maybe so, but he inspired a lot of young singers in his short time on this earth.
