Butterflies
LIVING ROOM - Kacey Musgraves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was just coastin'
Never really goin' anywhere
Caught up in a web I was gettin kinda used to stayin' there
Then out of the blue
I fell for you

Now you're liftin' me up, instead of holdin' me down
Stealin' my heart instead of stealin' my crown
Untangled all the strings 'round my wings that were tied
I didn't know him and I didn't know me
Cloud nine was always out of reach
Now I remember what it feels like to fly
You give me butterflies

Kiss full of color makes me wonder where you've always been
I was hidin' in doubt 'til you brought me out of my chrysalis
And I came out new
All because of you

And now you're liftin' me up instead of holdin' me down
Stealin' my heart instead of stealin' my crown
Untangled all the strings round my wings that were tied
I didn't know him and I didn't know me
Cloud nine was always out of reach
Now I remember what it feels like to fly
You give me butterflies, yeah
You give me butterflies

Now you're liftin' me up instead of holdin' me down
You're takin' my hand instead of takin' my crown
Untangled all the strings round my wings that were tied

I didn't know him and I didn't know me
Cloud nine was always out of reach
Now I remember what it feels like to fly

You give me butterflies
You give me butterflies

Overall Meaning

In the first two verses of "Butterflies" by Kacey Musgraves, the singer reflects on a stagnant and unfulfilling period in their life, where they were simply coasting along without much direction or purpose. They describe feeling trapped in a rut, getting used to the monotony and lack of excitement. However, everything changes "out of the blue" when they unexpectedly fall in love. The arrival of this new person in their life shakes things up and brings a sense of newfound lightness and freedom.

As the song progresses, the singer expresses how this newfound love has transformed their outlook and emotions. The person they have fallen for is lifting them up and bringing color and vibrancy into their life, contrasting with the doubts and insecurities that previously held them back. The metaphor of butterflies is used to symbolize the feeling of lightness, excitement, and transformation that the relationship has brought about. It's a metaphor for the singer's feelings of being reborn and experiencing newfound joy and freedom because of this love.

The chorus highlights how this love interest is not only bringing them joy and happiness but also helping them break free from the constraints that were holding them back. They describe how their partner is lifting them up and untangling the strings around their metaphorical wings, allowing them to soar and experience what it truly feels like to be free and alive. The chorus emphasizes the transformative power of love and how it has changed their perspective on life and themselves.

In the final repetition of the chorus, the lyrics reinforce the idea that this love has brought about a significant change in the singer's life. They recognize that they were not fully aware of who they were before this relationship, and now they are experiencing a sense of freedom and exhilaration that they had been missing. The imagery of flying and butterflies serves as a powerful metaphor for the emotional transformation and newfound sense of liberation that the singer feels in the presence of their beloved. Overall, the song "Butterflies" conveys a message of love's transformative power and the profound impact it can have on an individual's life and sense of self.

Now THIS is country music. Vivid storytelling, varied instruments, and the cherry on top that makes her iconic is that melodic voice. I love that her songs mean something. You can instantly tell it’s country not because she’s inserting a few y’all’s and southern cities into the lyrics, but because she’s immersing you in her story. THAT to me is what makes real, genuine country music. There’s a reason we all remember Dolly telling us that Jolene had auburn hair and Reba describing Fancy’s red velvet dress. God I wish more artists were actual artists rather than same clichéd, formulaic, auto-tuned bros farting out the same nonsensical and meaningless lyrics.

@nataliem1661

do you know any songs that have the same sound as this one?? bc i really love this song

@Lizzie-ve7kt

No 😭 I can’t think of anything else that quite has the same sound with the music, lyrics, and voice. Some of the parts of the song remind me a little bit of Sara Bareilles’ Love Song, but they’re definitely not that similar it’s just something about the beat that reminds me of it. Oh and Miranda Lambert’s Bluebird is a little reminiscent of this one too. I don’t think they’re super obvious or super similar comparisons but I do think some of the elements of each of those songs remind me a little bit of this one and Bluebird is another great country song with a beautiful voice, music, and clever lyrics. Sorry that I can’t think of anything super similar but that’s another thing I love about Kacey’s music, it’s totally unique and 100% her. Her entire golden hour album is amazing (as are all her albums) and her first big single merry go round is so genius.

@nataliem1661
