House of Cards
LIVING ROOM - Radiohead Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't want to be your friend
I just want to be your lover
No matter how it ends
No matter how it starts

Forget about your house of cards
And I'll do mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I'll do mine

And fall off the table
Get swept under

Denial, denial

The infrastructure will collapse
Voltage spikes
Throw your keys in the bowl
Kiss your husband goodnight

And forget about your house of cards
And I'll do mine
Forget about your house of cards
And I'll do mine

Fall off the table
And get swept under

Denial, denial
Denial, denial
(Your ears should be burning)

Denial, denial
(Your ears should be burning)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Radiohead's "House of Cards" can be understood as a reflection on a tumultuous romantic relationship. The singer expresses a desire to go beyond mere friendship and become the lover of the person they are addressing. They seem to be willing to accept whatever outcome the relationship may have, recognizing that beginnings and endings are unpredictable. The singer urges the other person to let go of their facade, symbolized by a "house of cards," and suggests that they should both focus on their own lives.

The repetition of the phrase "fall off the table and get swept under" can be interpreted as a metaphor for the vulnerability and instability that come with the risks and consequences of love. It suggests that denying or avoiding those risks is futile. The line "denial, denial" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the theme of denial and the challenges of facing the truth within the context of a relationship.

The imagery of the "infrastructure collapsing" and "voltage spikes" portrays the fragility of the relationship and the potential for it to fall apart. Furthermore, the metaphorical act of throwing keys into a bowl and kissing a husband goodnight implies a sense of marital infidelity or perhaps a desire for escape from a stagnant, unsatisfying relationship.

In summary, "House of Cards" explores themes of desire, uncertainty, and the delicate nature of relationships. The lyrics encourage honesty and self-reflection while acknowledging the often-denied complexities of love.

The good thing about Radiohead is they put you in touch with your feelings, the bad thing about Radiohead is they put you in touch with your feelings

Exactly.

wow so deep

@clairehansberry5137

Yep, absolutely but also the great thing about Radiohead, is when you feel neutral about things. Life isn’t fantastic but it’s not shit either, you can really appreciate how beautiful some of the songs are.
