Angela
LIVING ROOM - The Lumineers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

When you left this town, with your windows down
And the wilderness inside
Let the exits pass, all the tar and glass
'Til the road and sky align

The strangers in this town
They raise you up just to cut you down
Oh, Angela, it's a long time coming

When your Volvo lights lit up green and white
With the cities on the signs
But you held your course to some distant war
In the corners of your mind

From the second time around
The only love I ever found
Oh, Angela, it's a long time coming

Home at last

Were you safe and warm in your coat of arms
With your fingers in a fist?
Did you hear the notes, all those static codes
In the radio abyss?

Strangers in this town
They raise you up just to cut you down
Oh, Angela, it's a long time coming
Oh, Angela, spent your whole life running away

Home at last
Home at last

Vacancy, hotel room, lost in me, lost in you
Angela, on my knees, I belong, I believe

Home at last
Home at last
Home at last
Home at last

Home at last

Overall Meaning

In the song "Angela" by The Lumineers, the lyrics convey a sense of longing and introspection as the singer reflects on a journey that led them away from their hometown. The imagery of leaving town with "windows down" suggests a desire for freedom and escape, while the mention of "wilderness inside" hints at inner turmoil or uncertainty. The idea of letting the "exits pass" and waiting for the "road and sky to align" could symbolize a period of transition and seeking clarity in life's direction.

The lyrics also touch on themes of betrayal and disappointment, as the singer navigates through the challenges posed by the strangers in the town who "raise you up just to cut you down." The recurring mention of Angela throughout the song conveys a sense of significance and possibly a past relationship that has left a lasting impact. The repetition of "it's a long time coming" suggests a feeling of inevitability or anticipation of events unfolding.

As the singer drives on, the imagery of the Volvo lights and city signs highlights a sense of movement and travel towards an unknown destination. The mention of a "distant war" in the corners of the mind could represent inner conflicts or unresolved issues that drive the singer forward. The reference to finding love for the second time around adds a layer of hope and redemption amidst the challenges faced.

The song concludes with a sense of resolution and acceptance as the singer finally arrives "home at last." The lyrics delve into questions of safety, warmth, and belonging, emphasizing the importance of finding solace and peace after a long journey. The repeated refrain of "home at last" reinforces the idea of coming full circle and finding a sense of closure. The final lines, with the plea to Angela for understanding and the declaration of belief and belonging, encapsulate a sense of emotional reunion and coming to terms with one's past.

She falls in love with a guy (Ophelia). Her father dies and the guy she loves asks her to leave town with him (Sleep On The Floor) but she stays in that town. She marries a guy she doesn't love and has a child (Angela). When she's old and divorced she regrets not leaving town with her lover, back when her father died (Cleopatra). Credit to Swiftologist for this theory.

@gio7134

Daniel Tougaard I hate you "Spoiler"

@kimsiles3649

i thought that too but the only thing that doesnt fit is the tattoo in angela ..if she didnt went after him in sleep on the floor she woulnt have gotten the wave tattoo ..

@danieltougaard5721

Kim Siles You're totally right. But in "Sleep on the floor", you see her waking up again on the ground, like the whole music video was a dream she had. I don't understand how she got the tattoo.
