Tokyo Sunrise
LP Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Said a lot of words along the way
I meant them all while we reigned
But shores of love get beaten by the waves
and after it was done I wish I'd saved time

One less spark from a flame
One more heart beat away
I think I lost your scent after the rain
I'll find you when our paths cross by the gold mines

Ooh ooh ooh

Where you gonna go
Where you gonna go
I can't tell you that
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh yeah
Some day in the sky we'll see the same sun on the rise yeah
Wherever you go
Far as Tokyo
I can say
I'll see you again
I'll see you again
I'll see you again
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Aching with a debt never paid
Horses broken and splayed
Breathing half a breath since you're away
But while your blood is warm I'll keep the home fires

Ooh ooh ooh

Where you gonna go
Where you gonna go
I can't tell you that
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh yeah
Some day in the sky we'll see the same sun on the rise yeah
Wherever you go
Far as Tokyo
I can say
I'll see you again
I'll see you again
I'll see you again
Oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh oh

My love is never gone away
It's gonna come around someday
My love is never gone away
It's gonna come around someday

I'll see you again
I'll see you again

Overall Meaning

In "Tokyo Sunrise", LP tells the story of love gone awry. The lyrics suggest that LP has been in a relationship that was once strong and committed, but eventually met its end due to external factors like distance and time. The song begins with LP admitting that she had said a lot of words during the course of the relationship, and meant every single one. However, she acknowledges that even the strongest love can get "beaten by the waves" of the world and sometimes we lose the thing we cherished so much. And as time passes after a relationship, sometimes one wishes that they had used their time more wisely when they were in love. LP then sings about how even a small act of removing a spark (of romance) can lead to the separation of two hearts. She also wonders how to find and reconnect with her lost love, and she hopes that someday, they will cross paths again.

The chorus lyrics go on to express LP's laments further. As she asks her ex-partner where they're going, she realizes that she has no control over them anymore. However, LP remains calm in knowing that they'll see the same sun come up each day even if they are miles apart from one another, and one day she hopes to see her lover again in their lifetime. The bridge expands on the lingering feelings of love and devotion LP carries for this person even after they've gone their separate ways. LP's love for this person still lives on and she trusts that one day, her love will come back and they will see each other again. Overall, "Tokyo Sunrise" is an emotionally charged piece of music that showcases the difficulties of loss and separation in love.

This is one of the most brilliantly written songs I have ever heard. She's using a 7 count measure for the chorus and versus, throws in a single 8 count bridge, and then tosses in a 3/4 waltz count towards the end. I LOVE LP!

I can't be the only person that thinks this is one of the greatest songs ever

This song reminds my of my parents love. My dad passed away from cancer almost 10 years ago and my mum ached to be with him every day. She made the most and enjoyed life. Myself, my daughter and my mum traveled to our home country where we met long lost family and learned our heritage. It was an amazing time. We spoke about my dad everyday like he was with us. But through it all she ached.
My mum passed away last week and although I feel like my heart is ripped open again I take comfort in knowing my parents are together again at last.
Mummy.....
Daddy......
Someday in the sky we'll see the same sun on the rise. I'll see you again.
Until then I will LIVE, LOVE and LEARN just like you taught me.

Sorry for your loss. Hugs to you.

I can't even think about this song without wanting to cry. It's pure love and beauty unbound in the sky.
