Back of the Van
Ladyhawke Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the dark, in the back of the van cautiously holding your hand
Making eyes, making everything alright
Being home, being all alone, feeling sad watching the phone
Singing out, singing everything's alright

You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
In the dark, in the back of the van cautiously holding your hand
Making eyes, making everything alright
When I'm out, when I'm far away wanting you, wanting to stay
Singing out, singing everything's alright

Cause you set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire

When I wake and I'm far away, I know that you're leaving
In the dark when I'm all alone, I'm scared that you're leaving
When I wake and I'm far away, I know that you're leaving
In the dark when I'm all alone, I'm scared that you're leaving

Cause you set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire

You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire
You set me on, you set me on, you set me on fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ladyhawke's song "Back of the Van" tell the story of a relationship that is all-consuming and intense but ultimately temporary. The setting of the back of the van creates an air of secrecy and excitement as the couple holds hands and makes eyes at each other. The lyrics suggest that the singer is feeling sad and alone, perhaps because she is away from her lover, but singing and being with him brings her comfort and makes everything alright.

The repeated phrase "you set me on fire" suggests the intense passion and desire the couple feels for each other. However, this intensity is contrasted with the fear that the relationship may be temporary and that her lover may leave her. The singer acknowledges this fear in the lines "when I wake and I'm far away, I know that you're leaving, in the dark when I'm all alone, I'm scared that you're leaving."

Overall, the lyrics to "Back of the Van" capture the feelings of an intense and passionate relationship, but also acknowledge the fears and uncertainties that come with such a relationship.

Ten years on and this is still gorgeous. Timeless track!

This video really reminds me of the 80s and the greatness of that decade, and kinda makes me sad that music since then just hasn't been the same. I really hope Ladyhawke does well and maybe bring this kind of style of music back into fashion and the mainstream, but without airplay or promotion this wont happen.

Lenny Nero

This turned into a whole retro synthwave subgenre, and she was at the beginning of it.

From first time I heard Ladyhawke's music few months ago I can't stop thinking about it. I have few favourite bands and I haven't changed their place in my rank loong but when I heard Pip's voice it's changed. Brilliant music, you'll be my number one forever. Hope for new album this year and best wishes from Poland :-).
