Burning Up
Ladytron (2008 - Velocifero) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wrote a protest song about you, about you
Set off on a long march without you, without you x2

I wrote a protest song about you, about you
About whats left that lies between us, I'm walking
So many things we're burning for

I set myself on fire without you, without you
I wrote a song about you, about you
That not a soul was meant to hear, except you

I wrote a protest song about you, about you
I cheated gravity to chase you, to chase you
And through the burning space between us, you're falling
You have a long way, long way to fall

I set myself on fire without you
I wrote a song about you, about you
That not a soul was meant to hear, except you

So many things we're burning for (Repeat 7X)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ladytron's "Burning Up" describe the emotions and actions of an impassioned lover. The singer of the song, driven by a deep desire for someone they cannot have, sets off on a protest march, only to later go further and set themselves on fire in pursuit. The lyrics express the intensity of the singer's love, as well as their willingness to go to extreme lengths to be with their beloved.

The first stanza sets the tone for the song, with the singer writing a protest song about their love interest, without including them in the process. The second and third stanzas both include the line "I set myself on fire without you," a metaphor for the singer's passion and dedication to their cause. They also express the idea that the only person who needs to hear this song is the object of their affection. In the final stanza, the singer acknowledges the distance between themselves and their lover but insists that they will keep chasing them.

<3 Ladytron. I really appreciate musicians who have a passion for the music itself. This is another example of how Ladytron uses even the vocals as an instrument. It's been stuck in my head so much I actually had a dream where it was playing!

@ariesmajor

This song, smells like the sun, and draws memories of the warm daisy fields. The energy is ethereal.
