Gunfight At O.K. Corral
Laine Frankie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

O.K. Corral O.K. Corral
There the outlaw band make their final stand
O.K. Corral
Oh my dearest one must die
Lay down my gun or take the chance of losing you forever
Duty calls
My backs against the wall
Have you no kind word to say
Before I ride away
Away
Your love your love
I need
Your love
Keep the flame let it burn
Until I return
From the gunfight at O.K. Corral
If the lord is my friend
We'll meet at the end
Of the gunfight at O.K. Corral
Gunfight at O.K. Corral
Boot hill Boot hill
So cold so still
There they lay side by side
The killers that died
In the gunfight at O.K. Corral

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Laine Frankie’s song Gunfight At O.K. Corral is a heartbreaking ballad about an outlaw whose final stand, along with his gang members, is at the infamous O.K. Corral. The outlaw is in love with a girl and he knows that he will have to risk his life during the gunfight. He tells his lover that either he will die or he will lose her forever if he doesn't fight. He wonders if she has any kind of positive message for him before he rides away. He tells her that he needs her love and wants her to keep the flame burning until he returns if he does so. If he dies, then he hopes to meet his friend, the Lord, after the battle.

The song is about the violent and bloody altercation between outlaw cowboys and law enforcement officers that took place in Arizona in 1881. The song is both a mournful tribute to the men who lost their lives in the battle and a romantic ode to the love between an outlaw and his girl. The lyrics are particularly poignant as it details the type of everyday violence that was common during this period. The song shows how the Wild West was a very different world, unlike today's society.

My great-grandfather Ernst Krankel worked on this film. He was a Best Boy Grip Handler Trainer's Assistant. He accepted a special Oscar for his work. This is the only film he ever worked on.

This is a statement to western films. Frankie Laine was a marvelous entertainer for over 50 years. He could sing anything and make it a hit ! This song was so good back in 1957 and still holds up even now, such class and talent that was so wonderful !!!!!

That great bit of WHISTLING at the very start of this marvelous old west theme is SOOOOO evocative of the Ennio Morrecone scores for Spaghetti Westerns a decade later.

@caribman10

Yeah, he stole that.

@Crediblesport

I did not realize it is eight plus minutes long nice to hear it all in one song. Not broken up like in one of the greatest westerns ever made. I saw it 1st on t.v. in the early 1960s. Just rewatched it yesterday .

What a superb opening to a movie!!!...Frankie Laines voice is haunting and prophetic..I long for a speaking voice just like his.. he is also noted for other memorable western ballads like Rawhide, Cool Water, Mule Train...and its noticeable that Dimitri Tiomkin was also connected to another great western theme.. High Noon.
