Everything to Nothing
Lamb of God䀀 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Then you wake
Another body bag, pathetic
Picture frame obituary faded in the attic
A shadow of someone you used to be
You've seen so many in these flames
And swore that you'd never become the clich
A long forgotten memory
And then you wake

Everything you ever wanted
Everything you never had
Everything learned, forgotten and dead
Everything turns to nothing

Another day, a little dirt for the grave
Is it worth everything that you gave
What a beautiful way to waste away
Consumed by dependency
A lesson in despondency
A long forgotten memory
And then you wake

Everything you ever wanted
Everything you never had
Everything learned, forgotten and dead
Everything turns to nothing

And then you wake
How quickly the master
Turns into the slave
Slowly succumbing more
Every dying day

Everything you ever wanted
Everything you never had

Everything learned, forgotten and dead
Everything turns to nothing

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in “Everything to Nothing” by Lamb of God describe the feeling of hopelessness and despair that comes with addiction and the cycle of self-destructive behavior. The song paints a vivid picture of someone who has lost everything to their addiction and is left with nothing but regret and emptiness. The opening lines describe the aftermath of yet another death caused by drugs or alcohol, with the deceased person reduced to a mere picture frame obituary that is slowly fading away in the attic. The singer of the song sees themselves in the same position as the deceased person, and this fills them with a deep sense of dread and fear.

The song then goes on to describe the daily struggle of living with addiction and the toll it takes on one’s physical, mental, and emotional health. The lyrics describe the feeling of being trapped in an endless cycle, with each day bringing them closer to their demise. These feelings of despair and hopelessness are juxtaposed with a sense of longing for a better life, which is summed up in the lines, “Everything you ever wanted, Everything you never had.” The song ends on a somber note with the realization that no matter how much you want to change, sometimes it’s just too late.

Andy Hull is one of the best songwriters in music today, hands down. And I love how MO can rage one second, then seamlessly move into something soft and quiet. I love you Manchester Orchestra.

The fact that this comment doesn't have at least 20,000 likes after 10 years of this video being on YouTube is why this nation is in downfall and will eventually perish.

@Copywriting 101 While that is incredibly extravagant take, there absolutely is a hint of reality there.

This song is so good. All I needed to hear was the 16 second intro, and I was reminded about how sick this band is. It's ridiculous. The entire album this song comes from is incredible. Clearly one of the most unrecognized bands ever. Love Manchester Orchestra.

@Starsxboulevards

These guys are seriously one of the best bands I've heard in a lonnnnggg time.

@dalekay9ine

You're absolutely right. Three bands that have blown me away when I saw them live: Manchester Orchestra, Jimmy Eat World, and The Mountain Goats. An honorable mention goes to O'Brother who I saw/met when they opened for Manchester. Fantastic live show and incredibly nice/genuine guys.
