Cry Me A River
Lana Del Rey Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You cried the whole night through
Well, you can cry me a river
Cry me a river honey
I cried a river over you
Now you say you're sorry for being so untrue
Well, you can cry me a river
Cause I cried a river over you
You drove me, nearly drove me
Right out of my head
While you never shed a tear
Remember, I remember, all that you said
You told me love was too plebeian
Told me you were through with me and
Now you say, you say you love me
Well, just to prove you do
Come on boy, cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
You say you're lonely
You cried the whole night through
Well, you can cry me a river
Cry me a river baby i cried a river over you
Now you say you're sorry for being so untrue
Well, you can cry me a river, cry me a river
I cried a river over you
I cried a river over you
The lyrics of Lana Del Rey's "Cry Me A River" portray a story of betrayal, heartbreak, and revenge. The singer, who has been hurt by their partner's infidelity, expresses their pain through the metaphor of crying a river. The opening verse suggests that the person who caused their heartache is now saying they feel lonely and sorry for their actions. The singer dismisses their remorse by telling them to cry their own river since they have already shed countless tears over the relationship.
The second verse reveals the depth of the singer's emotional turmoil. They were driven to the brink of madness by their partner's actions, while their partner remained unaffected and never shed a tear. The singer recalls the hurtful things their partner said, including belittling their love as too common or ordinary. The partner claimed to be done with the singer, but now suddenly professes love to prove a point.
The chorus reinforces the theme of the singer's emotional release and vindication. They challenge their partner to cry their own river, as the singer has already cried enough tears over their betrayal. The repetition of the phrase "I cried a river over you" emphasizes the magnitude of their pain and suggests that they have gone through an immense emotional journey.
Overall, "Cry Me A River" delves into the aftermath of a broken relationship, where the singer seeks validation and closure by making their partner feel the same pain they experienced.
