Mary
Langhorne Slim Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Mary, you're sweeter than corn on the cob, it's scary
Mary, I'm in love with you
Mary, you seem so capable and free
Mary, It's rare I make love in my dreams
My best buddy dared me
To ask you if you'd marry me someday
Are you gonna be falling
For me.
Mary, I never meant to make you cry
Mary I know fantasies are full of lies
Are you gonna be falling
For me.
The first verse of Langhorne Slim's song "Mary" begins with a reference to Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ as the singer asks, "Mary, are you the mother of my God?" This line highlights the reverent admiration the singer has for Mary and her importance in Christian beliefs. The second line compares Mary's sweetness to that of corn on the cob, an interesting and unconventional image. The use of the word "scary" at the end of the line suggests a power or intense effect that Mary has on the singer. The third line is a direct expression of love for Mary.
In the second verse, the singer describes Mary as "capable and free," perhaps referring to her independence and strength as a woman. He then admits that he rarely experiences romantic connections in his dreams and that it took a dare from his friend to ask Mary if she would marry him. The line "are you gonna be falling for me" repeats at the end of the first and second verses, suggesting self-doubt and uncertainty about whether Mary will reciprocate his feelings.
