A native of Danville, Kentucky[1], Harris started playing the piano by age 9. His first formal vocal training came when he attended college at Western Kentucky University, from which he graduated in 1969. He later became a part of the popular Gospel touring group "The Spurlows." He gained fame with both his solo work, and his work as part of the Gaither Vocal Band, headed by Gospel musician and recording executive Bill Gaither.
His many live and televised appearances include Live with Regis and Kathie Lee, The 700 Club, several Billy Graham crusades, the Trinity Broadcasting Network, numerous Gaither Homecoming shows, and his own Christmas special. In his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, Harris has made many appearances on the WHAS Crusade for Children, a long-running local telethon benefitting children's charities.
Of his many chart-topping songs, perhaps his best-known are his duets with Sandi Patty called, "More than Wonderful" and "I've Just Seen Jesus." His song, "Mighty Spirit" was featured in a 1993 television campaign for the Points of Light Foundation, headed by President George H. W. Bush; he performed the song for Bush and his wife Barbara at the White House.
Harris has received an honorary doctorate of music from Campbellsville University in central Kentucky. He was inducted into the Western Kentucky University Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 1993.
Harris, his wife Cynthia, and children Lonnie and Teresa have lived in Louisville for more than three decades. Despite his schedule, Harris serves as a deacon in his home church, and previously served as its treasurer. Harris is well-known within the Gospel music industry for his reluctance to schedule performances that take him away from his family for any length of time.

God Loves You
Larnelle Harris Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That you should care --
Let me recall the deeds I've done
Deserving your praise;
And did you die for all my sins because you found me worthy?
Why, even now you stand before God's throne,
Pleading my case
It's one of those mysteries
So hard for me to see, oh
I don't know why you love me
I don't know why it's true,
But I'm glad you do
Had you turned and walked away,
Who'd didn't know to blame
And if you'd refused to pay my debts,
I'd still be in chains
And if you'd given up the serach,
I know I'd still be drifting
I would still be wandering alone
Trying to get home
I don't know why you love me
It's one of those mysteries
So hard for me to see, oh
I don't know why you love me
I don't know why it's true,
But I'm glad you do
Bridge:
Your love is patient, long-suffering and kind
I don't have to understand it
But you saved my life,
And I'm glad that's the way you planned it
I don't know why you loved me --
Oh, but I'm glad you do
Though I'm far from deserving it
I don't know why you love me
It's one of those mysteries so hard for me to believe in
I don't know why you love me
I don't know why it's true
But I'm glad you do
I (I) don't know why
(Don't know why)
You love me-- but I'm glad you do
I don't know why you love me
I don't know why it's true
But I'm glad you do
In Larnelle Harris's song "God Loves You," the singer is deeply moved by the love and grace of God. The first stanza expresses the singer's confusion about why God would care for them, given their own unworthiness. They question whether they are deserving of God's love and wonder why Jesus died for their sins. However, the second stanza brings a sense of comfort and relief to the listener, as the singer reflects on the fact that God never turned away from them, even in their moments of failure or despair. They acknowledge that if God had given up on them, they'd still be lost, and the idea that God continues to plead their case before heaven gives them hope. The chorus, which provides the song's main emphasis, ultimately acknowledges that even if the singer doesn't understand God's love, they are still grateful for it.
The bridge of the song provides a deeper understanding of what God's love means for the singer. They recognize that God's love is incredibly patient, enduring, and kind; it is not contingent on the singer's understanding or intellectual clarity. Yet, it was this love that ultimately saved their life, a reality which the singer is deeply grateful for. Thus, while the singer's journey of faith was somewhat uncertain at first, they end the song by expressing their gratitude for the truth that God does, indeed, love them.
Overall, "God Loves You" is a deeply introspective and personal song, expressing the inner emotions and thoughts of the singer as they contemplate their faith journey. It is a song of hope and thanksgiving, celebrating the unmerited love and grace of God in a way that is both personal and universal.

Tell me what am I to you,
What kind of significance do I hold in your eyes?
That you should care --
What makes you care so much about me?
Let me recall the deeds I've done
Allow me to consider the actions I've taken
Deserving your praise;
Worthy of your commendation
And did you die for all my sins because you found me worthy?
Did you sacrifice yourself for me because you judged me deserving?
Why, even now you stand before God's throne,
At this very moment, you advocate for me before God
Pleading my case
Arguing on my behalf
I don't know why you love me
I can't comprehend the reasons behind your affection
It's one of those mysteries
It's something that I don't understand
So hard for me to see, oh
It's challenging for me to perceive
But I'm glad you do
But I am grateful that you do
Had you turned and walked away,
If you had decided to leave and abandon me,
Who'd didn't know to blame
I wouldn't know who to hold responsible
And if you'd refused to pay my debts,
If you declined to settle the debt I owed,
I'd still be in chains
I would still be imprisoned
And if you'd given up the search,
If you had given up trying to find me
I know I'd still be drifting
I am confident that I would still be wandering aimlessly
I would still be wandering alone
I'd still be by myself, wandering without direction
Trying to get home
Attempting to find my way back to where I belong
Your love is patient, long-suffering and kind
Your love is characterized by patience, endurance, and benevolence
I don't have to understand it
I'm not required to comprehend it
But you saved my life,
You rescued me,
And I'm glad that's the way you planned it
And I'm grateful that's how you intended it
Though I'm far from deserving it
Even though I don't merit this love
It's one of those mysteries so hard for me to believe in
It's one of those puzzles that is difficult for me to accept
I don't know why
I am unsure why
You love me-- but I'm glad you do
You love me-- but I'm expressing my contentment that you do
I don't know why you love me
I'm unaware of the reasons you hold affection for me
I don't know why it's true
I don't know how it can be factual
But I'm glad you do
Nevertheless, I'm grateful that you do
