He was born in Galveston, Texas in 1943. After growing up in Seattle, Washington, in 1965, Coryell moved to New York City where he became part of Chico Hamilton's quintet, replacing Gabor Szabo. In 1967 and 1968, he recorded with Gary Burton. His music during the late 1960s and early 1970s combined the influences of rock, jazz and eastern music. He formed his own group, The Eleventh House, in 1974. Following the break-up of this band, Coryell played mainly acoustic guitar, but returned to electric guitar later in the 1980s.

The lyrics to Larry Coryell's song "For the Love of You" tell a story of a person who is searching for their lover, someone who they miss and long to be with. The first verse starts with the singer singing "Huh Hm Hoo Hoo hey baby, I'm looking for you", and goes on to describe how they are "drifting on a memory" and that there is "no place [they'd] rather be than with [their lover], loving [them]". The next lines talk about how even though day might turn to night, all they need is candlelight and a soft, romantic song to be able to spend time with their lover. They are "glad to be here alone with a lover unlike any other" and feel safe seeing a new horizon slowly coming into view.
The chorus then repeats twice, with the singer singing how they want to be living for the love of their partner and that all that they're giving is for the love of their partner. The second verse describes how being with their lover feels like being touched by a ray of sun that comes with the morning and how their love feels like "riding the waves" and being "enchanted" with their lover's touch. The singer sings about the paradise they have within them and how they can't feel insecure again because their lover is the key to their happiness. They also express a feeling of helplessness, saying "Using words to try and say what I feel, yeah love is real, oh I might as well sign my name on a card which could say it better, time will tell 'cause it seems that I've done just about all that I can do do do".
