Saint Monday
Lau Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Can't be re bought for trinkets unrigged
Ageless eyes glance certainty enchant dominion
Trapped in silent engage less old strange
Who's are these trees and why is this melton
Fenced from broken old linen to town
Who is this warehouse for nobody knows
Sand paper rust oil in the lines
Waiting to fire us back to the good times
Playing our tunes on a broken guitar
Trying to bring down the fire from the stars
The lyrics to Lau's song Saint Monday appear to talk about a certain sense of hopelessness experienced by the singer/narrator. The opening line "Angels regarding discarded penance" refers to the lack of hope available even when penance is discarded, meaning that there is no easy way to get redemption. The second line "Can't be re-bought for trinkets unrigged" implies that redemption cannot be bought with material things. The third line "Ageless eyes glance certainty enchant dominion" is possibly an attempt to capture the idea that despite the hopelessness, there is still a sense of certainty and respect for authority that makes it difficult to break free from the situation. The final line of the first verse "Trapped in silent engage less old strange" emphasizes the silence and resignation of the situation.
The second verse talks about certain physical details that contribute to this hopeless situation. The first two lines "Who's are these trees and why is this melton/Fenced from broken old linen to town" highlights the sense of isolation and separation from the rest of society. The line "Who is this warehouse for nobody knows/All the machineries are broken down" acknowledges that things have deteriorated to the point that the singer/narrator doesn't even know what a certain building is for, but they do know that everything inside is broken.
The final verse of the song seems to imply the singer/narrator's attempt to hold on to a sense of hope. The line "Sand paper rust oil in the lines" refers to the roughness of the situation, which has not been treated in a long time. The next line "Waiting to fire us back to the good times" acknowledges that things may get better, and the singer/narrator and their companions are holding on to that hope. The third line "Playing our tunes on a broken guitar" highlights the imperfection of the tools they have, but they still try to make the best of the situation. The final line "Trying to bring down the fire from the stars" is a metaphorical depiction of their attempts to conquer great challenges.
