Butterflies
Laura Michelle Kelly Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They only live a day
But their colours stay
And they remind me
Butterflies
Something so rare and pure
Beauty that can't endure
They remind me
Of all I could have done
The battles that I never should have won
And now you're gone I wonder why
I didn't see the butterflies,
In you
Now and then
Life gets on top of me
You gave me sanity
Now i can't see
Butterflies
You're like an angel lost
Changing the world you crossed
You would find me
And remind me
Of all I could have done
The battles that I never should have won
And now you're gone I wonder why
I didn't see the butterflies,
In you
Butterflies
Swiftly they fly away
But their colours stay
To remind me
Butterflies
Something so rare and pure
Beauty that can't endure
The world around me
You remind me
Of all I should have done
The battles that you never could have won
And now you're gone I wonder why
I didn't see the buttefly
In you
Laura Michelle Kelly’s song Butterflies speaks about the fleeting nature of life and the beauty and pureness that can be found in even the briefest moments. The chorus repeats the metaphor of butterflies as something rare and pure that can only exist for a brief period of time. The first verse talks about how butterflies may only live for a day, but their vibrant colors remain and serve as a reminder. Kelly then uses the butterflies as a symbol for a person who may have been taken too soon or was underappreciated in life. In the second verse, she addresses this person directly and talks about how they were like an angel lost, someone who changed the world around them but was perhaps not fully recognized.
The song is a poignant reminder to appreciate the beauty in life and the people around us while we can, before they fly away like the butterflies. It also encourages the listener to reflect on missed opportunities, battles that were not worth fighting, and regret for not recognizing the beauty in others.
