Welcome Home
Laura Osnes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Johnny made it home
Most of him at least
Had three operations
But the pain has not decreased
Nick learned to survive, means you never trust
Once you see the worst in man then how do you adjust?
Davy cracks a joke, claims to be alright
Drinks a fifth of vodka in his kitchen every night
And I stand here trying
Like Mother Mary with my private burden of grief to carry

Welcome home my boys
Welcome home my sons
Welcome home my husband
Welcome home my love
Welcome home, welcome home
Welcome home

Wayne is never free, schedules out his day
Filling every minute just to keep the ghosts away
He could never get back the life he had
Faced with raising kids who did not recognize their dad
Jimmy made it back to town four months ago
Lived to tell of things no one could bear to know
Keeps his guard up now a lot goes undiscussed
Focuses on fighting what he finds unjust

Welcome home my boys
Welcome home my sons
Welcome home my husband
Welcome home my love
Welcome home, welcome home
Welcome home

Donny does his best, trying to pretend
What he doesnâ€Čt talk about won't matter in the end
Donny made it home but thinks it wasnâ€Čt fair
How he made it out but left his buddy there
Donny doesn't sleep because the nightmares come
Donny wants an answer
Donny looks for absolution
And I would give up anything if I could give him some
If I stand here helpless, my arms extended
Knowing full well, darling, your war's not ended

Welcome home
Welcome home my husband
Welcome my love
Welcome home, welcome home
Welcome home my boys
Welcome home my sons
Welcome home my husband
Welcome home my love
Welcome home

LYRICS:
Calendars I filled,
Crossing off the days
Trying to distract myself in countless little ways
Holidays alone,
Left to reminisce
My imagination had to stand in for your kiss
Oceans you once crossed,
Now they disappear
Continents of longing vanish
Soon you will be here
And my heart keeps racing,
My thoughts keep fraying
But today I'll hold you
And not stop saying

Welcome home, my dear
Welcome home, my sweet
Welcome home, my hero
Welcome home, my heart
Welcome home
Welcome home
Welcome home

And the telegram,
Promising you'll land
Safely back at home today
Held tightly in my hand
Outside in the yard,
Snow begins to fall
Whiting out the distance,
Making everything feel small
From the picture window
Where I sit and stare
Is it really you who's turned the corner there
Starting for the doorway,
As I call your name
Desperate to believe our life will be the same

Welcome home, my dear
Welcome home, my sweet
Welcome home, my hero
Welcome home, my heart
Welcome home
Welcome home
Welcome home

All the sleepless nights,
Praying you'd return
Safely to my arms with all the honor you will earn
Letters every day,
Sent to reassure
Knowing all the dangers with the duties of the tour
Now our wait has ended,
Our years of yearning
And I'm at my doorway
My love returning

Welcome home
Welcome home my hero
Welcome home my heart
Welcome home
Welcome home
Welcome home my dear
Welcome home my sweet
Welcome home my hero
Welcome home my heart
Welcome home
Welcome home
Welcome home

Thank you for this song, Laura. Bandstand is such a touching show, and even though it's closing, it will always hold a special place in my heart.

@manuelorozco7760

I've seen better musicals than Bandstand (no insult intended) but I have been wanting to see something with Laura Osnes for a while.

@samcinematics

Laura and this cast have brought so much honor to our veterans in this absolutely incredible show. I don't think I'll ever tire of listening to its soul-stirring music. What a beautiful rendition. Every time I flew up to New York to see Bandstand it was pure Broadway magic. I really hope it's recorded/preserved in some way!!
