Shells
Laurel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Make me feel again
The sea is cold, my only friend
I don't want to be alone
On the shells, on the shore

Skin and bones, we've lost ourselves
Holding onto all we felt
You pushed me out to survive
I fell in love just in time

But does she have what you want?
Does she love how I love?
Is she everything you need?

Colder you are, making
Me fall. I am breaking
Love hurts when it's all you need
And you're breaking me

Staring into the dark
Scared to go back to the start
I'll hurt and you will heal
Nothingness is all I feel

But does she have what you want?
Does she love how I love?
Is she everything you need?

Colder you are, making
Me fall. I am breaking
Love hurts when it's all you need
And you're breaking me

I walk into the wind
The sea's waves against my skin
Empty hand and tired eyes
Leave me here. I'll be fine

But does she have what you want?
Does she love how I love?
Is she everything you need?

Colder you are, making
Me fall. I am breaking
Love hurts when it's all you need
And you're breaking me

And you're breaking me
And you're breaking me

Overall Meaning

The song "Shells" by Laurel is a heart-wrenching piece about an individual in love who is struggling to let go. The song opens with the lyrics, "Make me feel again. The sea is cold, my only friend. I don't want to be alone, on the shells, on the shore." The singer is asking their lover to help them feel alive again, indicating their current emotional state of being numb and alone. The reference to the sea, their only friend, suggests that the singer feels most at home close to nature but no longer feels the same peace that they once found there.

The second verse introduces the idea of how the two lovers lost themselves in each other, but the relationship ended in heartbreak, "Skin and bones, we've lost ourselves. Holding onto all we felt. You pushed me out to survive. I fell in love just in time." The chorus presents the singer's questions about their ex-partner’s new love, "But does she have what you want? Does she love how I love? Is she everything you need?", which shows that the singer is still interested in their ex-lover’s affairs though they know it's not healthy.

The singer's pain and hurt are accentuated in the following lines: "Love hurts when it's all you need. And you're breaking me." The entire song is metaphorically akin to waves crashing onto the shore, foreshadowing the singer's emotional state. The last verse ends on a bittersweet note, with the singer saying that they will be okay, "I walk into the wind, the sea's waves against my skin. Empty hand and tired eyes, leave me here. I'll be fine."
