The song was teased on Lauv’s Twitter and Instagram on December 27, 2019. One day before its release, Lauv said:
"2020 is about changing for the better so i made a song about it."
In an interview with Apple Music’s Beats 1, Lauv said:
"'The funny thing about the song is I actually started it about a year ago when I was honestly experiencing the worst time of my life. Like, I was just in a really low place, but the song, it’s called “Changes” and it’s about needing to change things in your life in order to be happy again and to get to a good place. It kinda took me a while, you know, this year’s been a crazy journey for me mentally and emotionally, and it took me, like, up until now to, like, fully finish it and to have the perspective.'"

I think I'm gonna cut my hair
'Cause these days, I don't feel like me, mm
I think I'm gonna take a break from alcohol
Probably won't last that long
But Lord knows I could use some sleep, mm
Changes
It's killing you to stay the same but
It's all gonna work out
It's all gonna work out someday
Moments
Living with your eyes half open
You've been thinking 'bout these changes
It's all gonna work out
It's all gonna work out someday
I think I'm gonna take some pills to fix my brain
'Cause I tried every other way
But some things you can't fix yourself
But insanity's doin' the same thing over and over
And life ain't easy these days
No, life ain't easy these days
Changes
They might drive you half insane but
It's killing you to stay the same but
It's all gonna work out
It's all gonna work out someday
Moments
Living with your eyes half open
You've been thinking 'bout these changes
It's all gonna work out
It's all gonna work out someday

In "Changes," Lauv talks about the feeling of disconnection from oneself and the need for change to regain a sense of identity. He starts the song by saying that he's getting rid of things he's not using and planning to cut his hair. He no longer feels like himself and needs to make some alterations to find a path forward. He then goes on to say he's taking a break from alcohol because he needs sleep; he's aware that this break will not last, but he needs it as a reset.
Lauv seems to be struggling with his mental health as he sings "I think I'm gonna take some pills to fix my brain 'cause I tried every other way but some things you can't fix yourself." He's tried to fix it through different ways, but nothing seems to work, and sometimes one needs external help, such as therapy or antidepressants. He then reflects on the fact that life is hard these days, and it's not easy to cope with it. The chorus of the song repeats the idea that changes might be hard, but it's harder to remain the same without growing, and it's all going to work out someday.
The bridge part of the song has a repetitive, catchy chorus, which emphasizes that the changes one is going through are gradual and may take time to come to fruition. Lauv believes that it's tough to see the change that is happening at present but is optimistic that things will eventually work out in the end.
Overall, the song is relatable and thought-provoking. Its melody and lyrics convey a sense of hope that despite the difficulties one may face in making changes, it will all be worth it in the end.
