Evergreen
Leah Senior Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I never thought
I"d be evergreen
I never thought
I′d be evergreen

Everybody is finding their stride
I can't get to mine
I just follow the line

You know the sun just won′t shine through
Unless I like what I do

I never thought
I would be employed
If you're the general
I'm a cabin boy

And everybody is making it worse
My shoes fill with dirt
It′s you who must assert

You know the fruit you bear′s so sweet
Falling soft and gentle at my feet

You know the sun just won't shine through
Unless I like what I do

And I try something new
But I can′t help do what i do

Overall Meaning

Leah Senior's song Evergreen speaks to the experience of feeling stagnant and trapped in life, despite the outside world progressing forward. The repetition of "I never thought I'd be evergreen" emphasizes this feeling of being stuck and unchanging. The singer is struggling to find their own path and purpose, feeling like they are just following along with the crowd. They express a desire to find something that they enjoy and that allows them to shine, but they are feeling blocked and unable to do so.

The second stanza picks up on the theme of feeling stuck in a dead-end job or role. The comparison of the singer being a cabin boy to someone else's general emphasizes the power imbalance and lack of agency that they feel. They are aware of the negativity around them, as their shoes fill with dirt, but they feel powerless to change this themselves. The repetition of "you know" is a plea for validation from an outside force that they are doing something meaningful and right.

The final stanza, however, emphasizes the potential for growth and renewal. The singer acknowledges that the fruit they bear is sweet, and they are open to trying new things. Yet, they cannot help but continue down the same path that they have been on. The song ultimately speaks to the struggle of finding fulfillment and purpose in life, and the difficulties we face in breaking out of our comfort zones to do so.

This feels nostalgic and I don’t know why but I absolutely love it

Blinky.

Leah's music somehow calms me and has an unsettling and eerie feeling at the same time

It’s like a woman singing something from Revolver or Magical Mystery Tour, I hope she continues with a sunny pop sound
