Tears On My Pillow
Lee Andrews And The Hearts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walled up in your castle
You wanna spend all day in it
You treat your world like it's fragile
Then you'll never find your way in it
Yeah it came so fast
Why's it always seem good things don't last
Why's it gotta be so hard
Why's it gotta be so hard
Yeah it went so fast
Swept in the waves, so far offshore
Why's it gotta be so hard
The way that it is yeah it's tearing me apart
I see me
Through your eyes
I see nothing
In my mind
I don't breath
I just think
I can't swim
I just sink
Depleted
I'm empty
Broken modus vivendi
Lessons the devil sent me
goodbye, universe, end me
Yeah it came so fast
Why's it always seem good things don't last
Why's it gotta be so hard
Why's it gotta be so hard
Yeah it went so fast
Swept in the waves, so far offshore

Why's it gotta be so hard
The way that it is yeah it's tearing me apart

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Tears on My Pillow" by Lee Andrews And The Hearts convey a sense of frustration and despair. The opening lines, "Walled up in your castle, you wanna spend all day in it, you treat your world like it's fragile, then you'll never find your way in it," speak to someone who isolates themselves from the world, afraid of getting hurt or disappointed. This attitude leads to missed opportunities and a sense of longing for something more.

The lyrics express the feeling that good things come and go quickly, leaving a lingering sense of emptiness. The lines "Why's it always seem good things don't last, why's it gotta be so hard" highlight the recurring theme of disappointment and struggle. The lyrics suggest that the singer is tired of putting in effort, constantly faced with adversity, and wonders why life has to be so difficult.

The chorus reinforces this sentiment, with the repetition of the question "Why's it gotta be so hard?" It reflects the exhaustion and frustration felt by the singer, who feels overwhelmed by the challenges life throws their way. The imagery of being swept in the waves far offshore further emphasizes the feeling of being adrift and unable to find stability.

In the second verse, the lyrics take a more introspective turn. The lines "I see me through your eyes, I see nothing in my mind" allude to a lack of self-worth and a loss of identity. It suggests that the singer's perception of themselves is clouded by the opinions and judgment of others. The subsequent lines "I don't breathe, I just think, I can't swim, I just sink" further emphasize their feelings of helplessness and despair.

The final lines of the song, "Depleted, I'm empty, broken modus vivendi, lessons the devil sent me, goodbye universe, end me," express a deep sense of exhaustion and resignation. The singer feels drained and broken, having learned harsh lessons that have left them feeling detached from the world. The mention of the devil and bidding farewell to the universe suggests a desire for escape or an end to their suffering.

Overall, "Tears on My Pillow" explores themes of disappointment, struggle, isolation, and a longing for a more fulfilling life. It captures the emotional turmoil and internal battles faced by the singer who feels overwhelmed by the challenges of existence.

I'm 75 and a Philly guy (born and raised) this particular Lee Andrews song just takes me right back to late grade school and high school. Lee Andrews and the Hearts had such great harmony. Good to dance to and good to "make out" to. I only saw Lee Andrews perform a show once. At that time the "Hearts" were two female back up singers. It was the early 70s and they were at a club in Hamilton, NJ (north of Trenton). I think the name of the place was DeNardo's or DiNucci's (I don't remember). A DJ from WTTM Trenton, Sal T, used to put the shows together. Sal T is in Florida these days
