So you would have thought, There?s a lot of thought going on
Ain?t no surprise, when you look into his eyes
Yeah, the lights are on, But nobody?s home
He?s a man, With his old man?s plans
Fight the Taliban, Fill the oil can up again
Bu there?s another man, A man from Pakistan
Saysย ?You can?t blame them, It was you who trained them to defend?
To the good old days, Of the comrades at the gate
They?re having those flashbacks, of all those kickbacks
When the state dished out, All the top jobs for your mates
And that?s how it is, That?s how its always been
Why am I even thinking, I can do a single thing
It?s not my whish, That you?re even listening
I?m just trying, Trying to do my thing
Anything
Lovely smile, but that only lasts a while
Cos the gentle can turn to mental, Very serious
So I would run a mile, Cos they ain?t got as many missiles
But there?s a lot more of them, Than there is of any of us
He?s only a little fella, But he can go hell for leather
But it?s not good enough, To be talking tough on TV
Cos if you?re a yeller, And you?re not a teller,
Then I can?t see nothing, In his sh*t for me
And it must be neat, To join that exclusive clique
Where your only hope, Is to talk to a dope in a suit
You?re one small leap, With a scientific technique
To have the physique, Even a sheep?s IQ
And that?s how it is, That?s how its always been
Why am I even thinking, I can do a single thing
It?s not my whish, That you?re even listening
I?m just trying, Trying to do my thing
Anything
The lyrics of Lee Evans's song That's How It Is are a commentary on the state of the world and society. The song opens with the description of a man with an unusually large head for his size, which is a metaphor for people who are seemingly intelligent and have the potential to make a positive impact. However, the following lines suggest that this is not always the case, as sometimes people may appear to have their lights on when in reality, nobody is home. This is indicative of the fact that people with much power and influence may lack the necessary empathy and understanding of the issues that afflict society.
The song then goes on to describe various political and social scenarios that are plagued with corruption, greed, and power struggles. The man from Pakistan who points out that the West trained the Taliban to defend themselves is an example of how international conflicts arise due to power plays by various countries. The mention of the Cossacks and the good old days at the gate is an allusion to the Soviet Union era, where there was a hierarchy of power and those at the top had all the privileges. The song suggests that these power structures continue to exist in modern times, and those who wish to make a change may feel discouraged.
The main message of the song is that the problems of the world are complex, and there is no easy solution. However, despite this, the singer is trying to make a change and do something positive. The repetition of the line "I'm just trying, Trying to do my thing" reinforces this message, and the fact that the singer persists in trying to make a difference despite the odds is a message of hope.

Drove all the way from Portsmouth to Sheffield to watch Lee Evans XL, what an experience being second row for such an amazing performer at his best in an arena. It was a privilege, such a great memory.
