God Bless the U.S.A. by
Lee Greenwood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If tomorrow all the things were gone
I worked for all my life
And I had to start again
With just my children and my wife

I thank my lucky stars
To be living here today
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom
And they can't take that away

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

From the lakes of Minnesota
To the hills of Tennessee
Across the plains of Texas
From sea to shining sea

From Detroit down to Houston
And New York to L.A.
Where's pride in every American heart
And it's time we stand and say

That I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt
I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

And I'm proud to be an American
Where at least I know I'm free
And I won't forget the men who died
Who gave that right to me
And I'd gladly stand up next to you
And defend Her still today
'Cause there ain't no doubt

I love this land
God Bless the U.S.A.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lee Greenwood's song God Bless The U.S.A. are an ode to the country and its flag. The first stanza begins with the hypothetical scenario of the singer losing all he has worked for and having to start afresh with just his family. He then expresses gratitude for living in a country where the flag still represents freedom, a theme that is repeated throughout the song. The chorus of the song is an expression of pride in being an American, where freedom is a cherished value, and the sacrifices made by soldiers who have died for the country are not forgotten. The singer vows to defend his country, and the final line of the chorus is a declaration of love for the land and an invocation of God's blessings.

The second verse of the song extols the beauty and diversity of the country, with the singer paying tribute to its people and their love for America. He calls on all Americans to take pride in their country and stand up for it. The song ends with a reprise of the chorus, emphasizing the singer's dedication to America and his love for the country.
