The Christmas Song
Lee Greenwood Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.

Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Help to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.

They know that Santa's on his way
He's loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother's child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.

And so I'm offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two

Although it's been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you!

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Lee Greenwood's The Christmas Song immediately evoke a feeling of warmth and coziness, as if the listener is sitting by a fire on a cold winter night. The imagery of chestnuts roasting and Jack Frost nipping at your nose brings to mind a very specific and nostalgic setting. The lyrics then move on to mention yuletide carols being sung by a choir and people dressed up like Eskimos. This paints a picture of a classic, old-fashioned Christmas scene where people gather together to celebrate the holiday with music and warm clothing.

The chorus of the song shifts the focus slightly to more traditional holiday symbols like the turkey and mistletoe, before honing in on the excitement of children during this time of year. Tiny tots, described as having eyes all aglow, struggle to sleep on Christmas Eve knowing that Santa Claus will soon be arriving with his sleigh full of toys and goodies. The idea of reindeer being able to fly is also mentioned, adding to the sense of magic and wonder associated with the holiday season.

its so special how everyone has a favoriate song passed to you by your "older" siblings parents etc.. and brings such a warm and great feeling,, and it doesnt matter what artist, all that matters is that you were there and remember hearing it and it "grows with you" no matter how old you are.. you keep playing it each year and pass it down,, and " it lives on"
