I remember when John Stearns blocked Dave Parker. Parker was a 230 lbs and build like a fullback, but Stearns played football in college. He was smaller, but he was used to contact, and he held his ground. Stearns won that one, and Parker got a broken wrist and missed a few weeks.

Players around the league thanked John Stearns for doing that to Parker, who nobody liked.

So, yes. That's how the game used to be played. It's what any competitive coach would have asked of you at the time.

Concussion protocol changed all that, and the injury to Buster Posey who'd been an MVP. Nobody wanted to see a guy like Posey miss another season.

I was on my high-school team briefly, but that was a long time ago, and baseball can be scary when the guys are all bigger than you and they hit the balls like rockets. I played first base but didn't last long on the HS team. I went back to playing with friends after school.

When I was a starter catcher for the last 2 years in high school, I avoided all of collision by tagging and jumping out for RUNNER’S safety. Some called me a wimp but I shrug it off. I have had send 4 football players to ER in my lifetime as a football player, including one of them blindsiding me. As a basketball player in adult league or pick up, my nickname is the Wall because I pancake or cannot be moved without knowing I did then e. It is the runner's responsibility to avoid contact with the fielder. If the fielder obstructed the base path, then the umpire will call it, but the runner does not have the right to run through anyone, regardless of where they are standing (at least nowadays).

The catcher also was not blocking the base path prior to having possession of the ball. If you watch, the catcher is in fair territory (inside the base runner) and receives the throw from third base, then moves into the baseline to make the play, which is exactly how he should have done it.

The catcher made some mistakes, like removing his mask and blocking the plate, but the runner is out and not just out but out of the game, and with the shoulder to the face, possibly suspended for additional games.

Those are the rules. You can prefer the old days if you want, but those are the rules today. All the runner had to do was slide, or run around and graze the catcher, not take him out and he's still be in the game and possibly not suspended for a few more games.

As a catcher, this is illegal at any age no matter how people feel about it. I know people are taught to try to dislodge the ball, but the ump made the right call and the rules don’t care that people think they’re tough. I've played little league, hot stove and high school baseball and seen this more times than I could count me being a part of those collisions and not one time was anyone ejected. The runner has to stay inside the running lane. So, with the catcher blocking the running lane you cannot run around him the ump would call you out because you are outside the running lane. You run through him hoping to unlodge the ball. People are too damn soft.

Ball was there before the runner. It’s no longer the base runners baseline. Kid was ejected and run doesn’t count. Even if the catcher dropped the ball the run wouldn’t of counted. All he had to do was attempt a slide. Rule has been in effect for as long as that kids been playing.

Guys in the 70s would essentially plow into the catcher in hopes of jarring the ball loose. It was more of a football/hockey move. Shoulder to chest. They never targeted the head area for obvious reasons. Yeah, you KOd the catcher who's still holding the ball, and you're still out.

Here? Dude came through with his shoulder and elbow high on purpose to injure. Should never play again especially at this level where these games mean very little.

The player coming into home could've easily shown some class and taken the out but had to be an ass wagon instead.

As a former catcher, guys did not score on me on that play.
Start off (as catcher) on one knee, lean in and raise one up as you get hit, and roll backwards, sending the runner flying through the air.

As a catcher I would like to see coaches teaching their catchers to protect themselves by getting the glove out front and holding the glove closed with their throwing hand. Had a similar play a couple years ago. Catcher didn’t field the throw cleanly as runner trucked him. I had an automatic out and ejection with ball resting at the backstop. Coach and fans went crazy because they don’t know HS rules. Malicious contact supersedes any other play (like obstruction) that might take place. They even posted a video on Twitter bashing me and running a poll as to whether runner should’ve been ejected! Stupid coaches play acting for the dumb parents. Crazy times

According to rule 7.13 of baseball, “A runner attempting to score may not deviate from his direct pathway to the plate in order to initiate contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate). If, in the judgment of the Umpire, a runner attempting to score initiates contact with the catcher (or other player covering home plate) in such a manner, the Umpire shall declare the runner out (even if the player covering home plate loses possession of the ball)”

But also, “The collision between runner and catcher during the taking run is called a violation of rule 7.13.” So really, the catcher did not violate any rules and has the right to defend the plate. A runner can’t just steam roll them over and collide with them. So it is illegal, and in this case it was pretty malicious as he leaned his entire side right into the catchers head.

Absolutely the correct call, but the umpire was totally out of position. He was, for whatever reason, considerably left of the plate up the 3B line. He should have been on 3Bline-extended, looking up the line. That way he can see all elements of the play in front of him without turning his head: ball, throw, runner, and defender — and possible obstruction by the 3rd baseman and a bag tag of the runner rounding 3B.

That said, I don't know what level this game was. It looked like the runner lowered his shoulder and hit the catcher in the face shoulder first. Even though the catcher was unwise to block the plate, the ejection was sound and I'd personally give the runner a couple games suspension for the deliberate shoulder to the face hit. This isn't MLB.
