1. Leeway was formed in Astoria, New York, USA in 1984 by guitarist A.J. Novello and vocalist Eddie Sutton under the name The Unruled. They played alongside groups such as Crumbsuckers, Prong, Ludichrist, Bad Brains, and Sick Of It All at the predominantly hardcore punk-oriented CBGB venue and had metal influences from the start. Guitarist and songwriter A.J. Novello said:
“ We might have helped open up a can of worms by bringing suburban metalheads to shows. Years later, it kind of ruined things in the scene, but I can't say I have any regrets.”
The fact that the band experimented with sound, had two guitarists riffing and solo-ing between them and the singer dressed in skeleton outfits and Yankees uniforms also set them out from the rest of the hardcore punk scene.
In November 1987 they entered the Normandy Sound studio in Warren, Rhode Island and recorded their first album, Born to Expire. However, due to delays and postponements, the album was not released until January 1989. Three follow-ups ensued – Desperate Measures, Adult Crash, and Open Mouth Kiss – before the band split. They recently reformed.

Marathon
Leeway Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Scores of people in writhing pain
This is the country that has to reign
See an end to all of our hopes
Put every fool on the end of a rope
A rising force and the power grows
Wake the sleeping giant that no one knows
You're in a marathon race now
I don't need to show you proof
Cause no one wants to hear the truth
You've always been on your own
Protecting the brothers and the blood
TOmorrow's another day
And he who fucks with you pays in spades
Morality's an all time low
A fucking laugh wherever you go
Everyone's looking at the past
You know the world ain't gonna last
The lyrics in Leeway's song "Marathon" are a reflection of the grim reality of our current society. The first few lines depict how people tend to seek an escape from their problems by indulging in catastrophes. The next line talks about the widespread suffering and pain that plagues our society, and how it has become the norm. The line, "This is the country that has to reign," possibly hints at how the government's policies and actions are responsible for the current state of affairs.
As the song progresses, the lyrics express the singer's frustration and anger about the state of the world. The line "Put every fool on the end of a rope" indicates that the singer wants to punish those responsible. The lyrics also talk about the hopelessness that people feel and how we have given up on our dreams. However, the rising force and growing power hint at the fact that people are not willing to accept these circumstances anymore, and there is a desire for change. The line, "Wake the sleeping giant that no one knows," possibly refers to a force that can bring about this change.
The chorus speaks to the metaphorical marathon that life is, where you have to keep fighting for survival. The lyrics "You're in a marathon race now," and "Keep fighting for your life," encourage listeners to not give up and continue to persevere. The lyrics also suggest that nobody wants to hear the truth, implying that society has become apathetic to reality. The final lines about "protecting the brothers and the blood" speak to the theme of fraternity and loyalty.
