Totalitarianism has very deep roots in Chinese history and the Chinese psyche.

The Chinese practically invented systematized and systematic totalitarianism millennia before it made an appearance in Europe.

Totalitarian ideologues Lord Shang and Han Fei-tzu were millennia ahead of their time in Chinese history and their ideologically totalitarian doctrines and principles practised by the short-lived but highly effective Ch'in Dynasty unified China under a central and centralized government. And China has been governed from the center ever since.

Mao Tse-tung greatly admired the Ch'in Dynasty and the Ch'in greatly influenced Maoist thought.

Willingly abiding by the rule of law is thoroughly foreign to the belligerent and bellicose Chinese. They can only be ordered and organized by force. The Chinese can only be regulated and controlled by force. Mao said this quite openly himself.

Cixi did not kill her son Emperor Tongzhi on his throne he died of syphilis. Wanzhen, Cixis sister and mother of Emperor Guangxu died in 1896 probably of cancer or a fever. Although she did Kill Guangxu in 1908 to prevent the Japanese gaining control of China as he had links with wild fox kang and Count Ito. Cixi died following a stroke on 15th of November 1908 at the age of 73 having just installed Pu Yi as emperor.

I was in probably the worst moment of my life. In Chile two years ago... I had been attacked by thieves. No money nothing. Fell out of the hospital with 3 broken ribs, a broken arm and concussion. Literally fell over the wall into a cemetery and slept for two days. Fly bitten and living off apples from the tree that gave me shade I took from my backpack a book I had bought the week before. Ted White's book. Telling of this time... Without the anti red feeling. I read it twice over in the following few days before I was found emaciated by local kids. I could not stand due to what I later found was a skull fracture.

Not much was known about the effects of the Great Leap Forward then, and there was virtually no publicity at all about the famine which killed immense numbers of people. Access to China was very restricted at the time and the few visitors who got in were kept in cities where there was food, so nobody from the outside saw the starvation, particularly reporters.

Two fun background facts that are not mentioned in this video.

1. Emperor Guangxu did actually try to implement Japanese style reforms in China in 1898, but that attempt was completely stopped by Guangxu. Now he was technically not Cixi's son but instead her nepew, but could it possibly be him that is meant to be the "son" that Cixi killed?
2. The "boxing" that the Boxer rebels practiced were actually a form of kung fu, and it was called boxing in Europe and America because kung fu wasn't well known there in these times. And it's also possible it still was unknown in these countries when this documentary was made.

I heard it said that before 1972, no country resembled our perception of modern North Korea so much as China. Fragile is not meant to imply that they are weak. Instead it is to capture how their system and institutions can withstand disturbances. They have had to make major adjustments that risk the collapse of CCP rule in order to provide basic necessities. As they continue their development to world leading economic power all of the restrictions on people, free speech, and opposition become harder to maintain—and it is not a linear impact. But I give them a lot of credit for recognizing the devastation caused by the shorter transition of former Soviet Union to a more open society and trying to avoid a similar outcome.

Why didn't they ask for American help? We could have started with simple mules and single bladed plow. Farmers with land in two seasons would have more than they needed and could export it or sell it to local markets. Then invest in railroads so surplus rice and grain could be delivered to Sea Port's. Help them build steel a factory and expand on the missionary school's. Train engineers. The moral of all this for me is that China is a very old country that has always been governed by repressive governments. Their high population makes the kind of lifestyle we have probably unobtainable for the country. America needs to judge China in a way that is not ethnocentric. When we apply American standards and American values to China we miss the big picture.

Your knowledge of the region seems very limited. Hence the need to conjecture in order to make clear what you were trying to say.

What is now defamed as white terror in Taiwan refers to the period of martial law between 1949 to 1987. The measure was chiefly an attempt to contain the enormous amount of infiltration and espionage from CCP's end (which is one of the key reasons for KMT's military defeat earlier in the civil war). In other words, most investigations and persecutions were directed towards mainlanders who came after WWII. I am well aware of DPP's attempt to mess around with history but even their version of history involves chiefly the Han Chinese population on the island. It has very little to do with indigenous peoples of Taiwan. A reconciliation council was setup by the KMT government in 1998. There are documentations instead of hearsay just letting you know. Most indigenous peoples of Taiwan have opted for KMT for the several decades. This is true even in the 2020 election. This is just statistics.

Many Chinese hope the factories never came, look at the pollution and other damages done to their land and health. These workers make a few cents from the product they make, it is the American business men who are taking the big cut of the profit.
