Leichenwetter Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm,
Er faßt ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm.
»Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht?«
»Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
Den Erlenkönig mit Kron und Schweif?«
»Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
Gar schöne Spiele spiel ich mit dir;
Manch bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand;
Meine Mutter hat manch gülden Gewand.«
»Mein Vater, mein Vater, und hörest du nicht,
Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht?«
»Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind;
In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind.«
»Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehn?
Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;
»Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;
Erreicht den Hof mit Mühe und Not;
In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.
The lyrics of Leichenwetter's song Erlkönig tell a story of a father and son traveling through the night on horseback. The father holds his son securely in his arms to keep him warm and undisturbed. However, the son is visibly frightened and repeatedly tells his father that he sees the Erlking, a mythical creature of Nordic folklore, with a crown and a tail made of mist. The father dismisses his son's fears, explaining that it is simply a patch of mist.
As they continue their ride, the Erlking appears to the son once again, promising to play games and show him beautiful things on the shore. The father reassures the son, but his fear intensifies as the Erlking's daughters appear, also trying to lure the boy away. At this point, the Erlking threatens to use force to take the boy, and the son cries out to his father that the Erlking has hurt him. The father races to their destination but arrives too late as the boy has died in his arms.
The interpretation of the song talks about the theme of death and the supernatural elements that are present. The Erlking is a symbol of death, tempting the son to come with him to the other side. The father tries to reason with the son, dismissing his fears as simply mist or the sound of the wind in the trees. The son's fear and panic intensify, and he eventually succumbs to the power of the Erlking, leading to his untimely demise.
