Following the release of Country Strong, Meester took her music in a different direction away from pop and began collaborating with the band Check in the Dark on a more singer-songwriter style of music. The previously anticipated pop album was never released and in 2012 she embarked on a five-date tour with Check in the Dark that featured the new music live for the first time. In June 2012 Meester confirmed all songs had been recorded with Check in the Dark as a demo.
In September 2014 Meester announced the release of her debut album, Heartstrings, through her own record label, Hotly Wanting. The title track was available with pre-order; the album was released on October 28 2014. The music video for the title track was also released, one day later. All nine songs were written by Meester and produced by Jeff Trott. Heartstrings received generally positive reviews and peaked at number 1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart upon release. From January to March 2015 she toured with Jeff Trott and the recording band members in support of the album, visiting nine cities in two weeks, including a residency at The Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles.
Dreaming
Leighton Meester Lyrics

You say you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down?
It's only right that you should
Play the way you feel it
But listen carefully to the sound
Of your loneliness
Like a heartbeat drives you mad
And what you lost
And what you had
And what you lost
Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say women they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean you'll know
You'll know
Now here I go again I see the crystal visions
I keep my visions to myself
It's only me who wants to
Wrap around your dreams and
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
Dreams of loneliness
Like a heartbeat drives you mad
In the stillness of remembering what you had
And what you lost
And what you had
And what you lost
Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Women they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean you'll know
Thunder only happens when it's raining
Players only love you when they're playing
Say women they will come and they will go
When the rain washes you clean you'll know
You'll know
You will know
Ooh you'll know
The opening lines of "Dreaming" by Leighton Meester suggest that the singer’s lover desires freedom and the singer cannot keep them restrained. Despite their separation, the singer acknowledges that their partner should follow their passions without inhibition. The singer then delves into the theme of loneliness through a metaphorical reference to a heartbeat, which serves as a constant reminder of what was lost in the relationship.
The song shifts to a chorus that appears to channel Fleetwood Mac’s song, "Dreams." The chorus reveals that thunder only happens when it's raining, players only love you when they're playing, and women come and go. The singer preps their loved one for the inevitability of separation by implying that after a cleansing rainstorm, they will know and that the hope is that they will treasure their moments together despite the eventual loss.
As the song reaches its end, the singer sees the crystal visions and can only keep her dreams to herself. The chorus repeats, reinforcing the prophecy that thunder only happens when it is raining, and people only love you when they are playing. The final lines of the song acknowledge that women come and go, but the listener will know when they are experiencing love's true essence.

Dreaming"
A haunted soul
And yes, I know that it's all immaterial
And that's not all
See I want more of
Something that I know is not real
[Pre-Chorus:]
Is this real life
Why can't I decide
I think I'll stay awhile cause
[Chorus:]
I'm only dreaming that the cobweb's gone
And the lights are on
You're just a call away
And nothing's wrong
And nothing's going away
It never ends
When my mind sends me into oblivion
The secret place that is laced
With a dose of what could've been
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus]
Leave me behind in peace, asleep
Slipping in the sweet scenes
Of my favorite dreams
[Pre-Chorus]
[Chorus x2]
