Sandcastles
Lemonade - Beyonce Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We built sand castles that washed away
I made you cry when I walked away
Oh, and although I promised that I couldn't stay, baby
Every promise don't work out that way, oh, babe
Every promise don't work out that way

Dishes smashed on my counter from our last encounter
Pictures snatched out the frame
Bitch, I scratched out your name and your face
What is it about you that I can't erase, baby?
Well every promise don't work out that way, no no, babe
Well every promise don't work out that way

And your heart is broken 'cause I walked away
Show me your scars and I won't walk away
Oh, and I know I promised that I couldn't stay, baby

Every promise don't work out that way, no no no no no
Every promise don't work out that way

Overall Meaning

The song Sandcastles, from Beyonce's album Lemonade, is a poignant ballad about the fragility of relationships and the pain of broken promises. The first stanza talks about the fleeting nature of relationships, using sand castles as a metaphor for love. Sand castles are structures that are built on the sand, but are washed away by the tide sooner or later. Similarly, the love between Beyonce and her partner was built on fragile ground and seemed to fall apart, no matter how strong their passion was. Beyonce admits that by walking away, she made her partner cry, even though she had promised that she couldn't stay. The message behind the stanza is clear- relationships can be unpredictable, and promises cannot always be kept.

The second stanza talks about the aftermath of a fight between Beyonce and her partner. It describes how Beyonce expresses her anger and frustration by destroying things in their home. She scratched out her partner's name and face in pictures, symbolizing how she wanted to erase his presence from her life. Despite these attempts, however, she cannot seem to shake off her attachment to him. In the chorus, Beyonce repeats the message that not all promises can be kept, and that love can be a fickle thing- one moment strong, and the next, fleeting.

The final stanza is a plea for forgiveness and understanding. Beyonce acknowledges that by walking away, she has caused her partner a great deal of pain. She asks to see his scars, as a reflection of the emotional pain that he has endured, and promises not to walk away again. However, she also reiterates the chorus that not all promises work out, highlighting that relationships can be complex and unpredictable.

Overall, the song Sandcastles is a deeply emotive and vulnerable portrayal of the fragility of relationships. It speaks to the complexity and pain of love, and the difficulty of keeping promises in relationships.

what she says before song:
baptize me
now the reconciliation is possible
if we are gonna heal let it be glorious
one thousand girl’s raise there arms
do you remember being born
are you thankful for the hips the cracked
the deep velvet of your mother and her mother and her mother
there is a curse that will be broken

The voice crack is pure emotion and that’s a real artist.

Maria Gonzalez Thank You! I was like: it isn’t funny, it is strategic to bring emphasis to your mastery of your own voice. When she makes her voice crack she is going from her chest voice to her head voice, vice-versa. I just love how well she sings. She inspires me to be better, not only by how spectacular both her singing and talking/storytelling voice is, but how her story is amazing and she is such a strong woman. Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter deserves all of the good things in her life and I wish her many more years and nothing but love and prosperity in her future.
